red coolant how much

I bought 2 red coolant from yota dlr today. Specs say 50/50 with water.v6 capacity is 2.5 gallons. Could I get away with 1 red coolant gallon and 1.5 distilled water. So the raito when be around 40 red coolant too 60 distlilled water. I bought 2 red coolant just in case but if I could return it I would.

yes its the long life 50/50 red coolant. Retail is $28.00 but with my discount I got them for $22.00 each. Thats a good price for $15.00

Funny just had mine changed at the stealership and was told for 3 Gen 4runner it was a 70/30 coolant mix.....

A 50/50 mix is best. Too much water can make it overheat and it'll corrode the internals more. 70/30 (water to coolant) is too dilluted. I'm surprised a stealership would say that... actually, no I'm not. Sometimes people do the opposite 30/70 (water to coolant) if they live in really cold climates so it won't freeze, but running more than 50% water is never a good idea.

OP, keep the rest of the coolant you didn't use and carry it in your 4runner. Especially in the summertime.

Yup 9.3 qts, BUT I was thinking of not replacing the rear heater lines and just reroute them instead. So t4r W/O rear heaters only take 8.5 qts. so 50/50 would make it 4.25 qts coolant and 4.25 distilled water. So I'm still debating on running 4 qts of red coolant and 4.50 distilled water. I dont think the the extra .25qt of water would make difference. I'm not baking a cake. What do you guys think.

My dealership also said they only use 1 gallon of red when replacing all coolant. which would be a 43% coolant to 57% water ratio. Does that slight variance really matter?

It was discussed before that the red wasn't even available until 99 I believe. It was news to me too.

^That's right. Personally, I think it's just marketing so Toyota can sling coolant for 3 times more than they should. I don't think Royal Purple motor oil is necessary either because it's purple and expensive. But both RP and Toyota coolant are good products... just not triple the price of normal fluid good IMO.

Don't worry SoCal, I've been running green coolant for a decade now in my '97. I just change the coolant every 2 or 3 years. The '97 manual even says "use any ethylene-glycol based anti-freeze" so you're ok.

My recently purchased 2001 already had the green coolant in it but it also appears that the radiator/hoses have been replaced.

I use one gallon of coolant and fill the rest with distilled water which should be somewhere around a 60 water to 40 coolant mix I think.

The issue with less than 50% water is corrosion protection. It says so right on the back of the Toyota Red Long Life Coolant bottle. This stuff is supposed to be good for a 50K change interval. The boil and freeze temps are not going to be an issue unless you are in a seriously cold climate. Water is actually a more efficient coolant without the ethylene glycol. That's why you should never go over 70% anti-freeze.

So I would keep it to 50/50 if you insist on running a 50K change interval. But I bet you are fine up to 60% water if you live in a non-extreme cold climate and keep your change interval closer to 30K.

Take into consideration that there is also some fluid left in the block and if you don't remove that plug that's probably .25 quart anyway. The 9.3 qt capacity is bone dry specs.

Also I was thinking about catching my old Toyota Red in a clean bucket and after adding the new gallon of red and gallon of distilled water if I need to add some...use the old red to top off.

Which is basically good for next water pump change.
