Redneck Airbox Mod V8's (pics)

I'm not sure how I ended doing this, but I think I noticed the front of my airbox would prop open yet all the air would still pass through the filter. I had the "deck plate Mod" on my old Tacoma to increase airflow, but it always sounded like crap w/ the 3.4 V6.
As you can see it took all of 5 mins and makes the engine sound nearly as good as a CAI. The down side is it's sucking in warm air from the engine bay rather than from the fender, but I'm ok w/ that for the few times I want a louder engine. I have not tested MPG, but I have taken many trips with it installed and can't tell much difference if any.

Enjoy, I'm open to criticism but be nice, I know it is nothing fancy, and wasn't intended to be. BUT...for those of you who want a awesome sounding V8, here's the ticket!

No different that a cold air intake, or aftermarket exhaust.

I truthfully did not set out to do this, but when I saw a broken clip on my airbox, and that the rear stays clipped, it made me think of the old "deck plate" mod. So 5 mins later there ya have it.
I didn't "do" anything to my rig, just have the option for nice engine sound. It's not like it's glued in, it comes out in 5 seconds you're back to stock.

For those who have taken the charcoal filter out, this is like that on steroids. Sounds great and very peppy throttle response.

Most cais have an opening under the hood, so this is no different. cais have been shown to do very little for our rigs, yet people still buy them. Most comment on the sound. I've road in his 4runner and this actually makes a big difference, sounds way better!

I'll try to get a vid, but I'm not sure you can hear the difference well enough. It sounds the best under load, so at about 30 mph it really shows up.

I tried it but the hood won't close even with something small propping the filter box open. All that excitement for nothing.

I know it's sucking in hot air. This is just for sound and just for fun. I will say, when on the interstate there's more than enough air moving into the engine bay that it is probably not sucking in hot engine air. Around town I'm sure it is.

Goofy as it may be, you're right, it's not a bad idea. If there was a way to make a aluminum spacer for air box lids on different makes/models, you might have something. There are plenty of people that want the cool sound of a truck/suv w/o buying a $300 CAI. A $20 spacer that would allow air to flow through the filter still, could be the answer. Not to mention it goes in and out as you want it to.
