Regarding my Exhaust

I have a Magnaflow 12586 that has a 22" body length. It sounds good but I can only really hear it when accelerating, and with my 4Runner having the V8 I want it to stand out a little more. When I start it up in the morning you cannot even tell I have an aftermarket muffler. The remainder of the exhaust system is stock so I do still have the resonator.

I'm looking for a bit more of a rumble. I've considered a few things;
*swap the magnaflow for a Flowmaster 50,
*swap the existing 22" Magnaflow for an 18" (heard the shorter they are the louder they are) or
*keep the 22" Magnaflow and have the resonator removed and the pipe routed to exit on the side.

I never drive with my rear window down so I prefer to keep the stock resonator if it prevents drone.

I really prefer the straight through system the Magnaflows have vs. the Flowmaster chamber designs since I feel the Flowmasters kinda hinder performance.

On my 08' Tacoma I tried a Flowmaster 40, 50 and 70 and all had some drone while cruising on the Fwy. I had this same Magnaflow on my 2010 Trail Edition and it was fine since that was a V6, but since this is a V8 I want a deeper tone.

So my question is, what should I do?

I mean, how loud do you want this thing to be? No offense, but if I were your neighbor, I would hate you. You want it, at idle, to be loud? Annoying! idle. Idle is supposed to be calm and quiet, so when you are pulling out of your driveway at midnight to go out, you don't wake my kids....

I can't comment on the specifics of what to do.. only the notion of trying to make a vehicle loud at idle. Annoying.

^LOL, I don't want it that loud! That's what my Tacoma sounded like with the Flowmaster 40. I could never sneak around, everyone knew I was coming around the corner!

But currently someone could start up my 4Runner and unless they romp on the gas and take off, I wouldn't be able hear it.

I vote 40 series and no resonator like mine here is a couple pics I had the magnaflow in a shorter muffler on my 04 SR5 V6 and it had alot of drone with the resonator removed

you may remember when Ivan "iron man" was with Magnaflow, one thing worth mentioning is that with MF you are buying smoother flow, they are made to flow better, not resonate more noise. I have flow master 40 with no resonator and it sounds great at idle and fair when you step on it. It would sound the best if you were to make it true dual, but it is not cheap for ours.

I do like my FM, but I wish I had more grumble at higher RPMs

I have a flowmaster 50 WITH the resonator still on and I think its perfect. It has that low V8 rumble and no drone on the highway (at least I cant hear any with the music at a normal listening volume) and its still quite enough with the windows up.

Well I decided to keep it cheap and had the Muffler shop remove the Resonator. I don't really like the look of the side exiting tail pipes so he added a 3" pipe and just extended it to the back to exit just under the bumper, similar to the stock setup; however, he cut a 45 degree angle on it so it shouldn't catch too much off road.

WOW!!! You wouldn't believe the amount of change in the tone from just removing the resonator! It's incredible. I have yet to test the amount of drone on the fwy, that will come later today. Hopefully its not too bad.

Thanks for everyone's input. One of these days I'll stick on the Go-Pro camera and try to record the sound.

I will be keeping the stock Resonator just in case I need it put back on some day down the road.
