? regarding recovery of another vehicle

well, digging up an old thread, but yeah Falls at the time of the afformentioned incident my truck was definately locked and in 4lo. however no damage was done....
I went out lastnight to a new spot a friend and I have google earthed and got stuck once in a disgusting mudbog..... My friend pulled me out using two nylon straps and my facotry hitch pin. Its crazy when u r stuck or in a situation (this one was the first situation since the one mentioned earlier) how crazy the gadgetry of these trucks are. The sound of everything cranking(diff locked + 4lo), when u arent getting anywhere is actually pretty disheartening! I always get all sensitive after ive been stuck (3 times ever) and/ or have pushed my equipment more so than usual. I guess im kinda a b|tch about that :biggrin2:
Eitherr way, its my first stuck with the coopers and it was just TOO GNARLY of a hole and i should have hung more right if anything and kept momentum.

Is it safe to pull off a hitch pin ??
be a lot cheaper than a shackle rec. and a lot cheaper and no one would know its there. If you have the receiver shackle you have to take it in and out or it will probably get stolen.
Wouldn't it really be holding the same weight as if you had a shackle rec. in there. The rough edges coming out of the receiver might chew up the strap though.

I keep my hitch shackle in one of the little compartments over the rear wheel wells. I wouldn't leave it in the hitch unless I had it locked with a locking hitch pin.
You can pull off a regular hitch pin, but if you manage to bend it, you might have a hard time getting it out. In fact, that's exactly what happened to a buddy of mine. His bent so much that he had to get it cut out before he could use his hitch again.

Here is my usage of the hitch pin
1) pulled out an older body style f150 on 35 super swampers
2) tried on multiple attempts to recover a ram to no avail (what started this thread)
3) got slightly snatched by my friend, it was def. the most snatching/ utilization of stretch weve used yet, nothing over the top.
She hasnt bent yet, however an arb shackle im sure is inumerably stronger.

Are you comfortable with the off road ability of your truck since you have been stuck or run into these situations. I know what you mean about disheartening feeling. Stuck 2x so far myself.
Falls, oh yeah I am comfortable and confident. Here in FL, we dont have any rocks really or rock crawling, so that really isnt an issue. Its not something ive ever done or even sure id want to do in my runner. What we do have LOTS and LOTS of is sand, and I feel that this is where the 4R is THE BEST. Even when i was bone stock I COULD NOT get stuck in sand, no matter what the situation the truck could either reverse out or just charge thru with more momentum. With the coopers momentum needn't come into play, the claws do the work.
The only area where I get nervous is MUD, and im not talking muddy water crossings, im talking MUDDD. Straight spackle.The first time i got stuck in mud was because I had the stock near dead dunloppies, I could NO DOUBT do that hole now. The last one was just TOO HEAVY, or thick/deep, mud. I think it would take a truck with a much bigger tire to make it thru with ease, or just hit it like a bat out of hell, which im not comfortable with.
So yeah man, I think these trucks are very capable BESIDES when dealing with gnar mud. Mud isnt really my bag anyways, there are usually too many variables out of my control. Not to mention the B|TCH of a clean up! I had to wash my truck twice to get the mud off the paint, it was som really greasy/oily mud. yuk!
I shouldve trusted my gut! and the hole was a corner that u can see around..... so even if i did make it who knows what was around that next bend. Winch anyone? ;-)
These trucks have roots deep in the offroad realm, and I LOVE taking advantage of that.
