Regear or new axel

Did some research but couldn't find a definite answer, would it make more since to regear my differential for around $700 parts and labor to 4.56 or find a axel from another truck and swap that in? I think I could get an axel for cheap at a junk yard but don't know what else I would need. Would it be just the axel or should I get the drive shaft too? Looking for the cheapest possible way or I might just drop my 31s back to stock 225/75/15 to get my power and braking back. Any info would be great thanks!

Good question^ because I am running 265/70/17s and still get like 19mpgs on the hwy.

I'm running 285/75/16 MT's, no real maintenance to speak of, and I'm getting over 20 MPG on the highway. And it's actually pretty quick too. But a lot of that is due to the 3 pedals I think.

maintenance is great on it, it's just I have 31's on 3.7 gears, my brother has a 4x4 96 and i think his gears are 4.10 or 4.30 with about the same size tires 265/70/16 and I just want the extra pull, I am about 4 tire sizes up after all lol.

oh and I just changed the differential fluid which helped it be a little faster and a lot smoother.

If you want to swap, you don't need to swap the entire axle, just the diff.
And used diff (if you find one) might be $100-200, just make sure it's the ratio you want.

Yeah, since you have a 2WD, the diff is all you need to swap out. I would go for 4.1 if I were you, they are the most common. 4.3 second choice. The 4.56's are pretty rare, so would likely cost more, but it all depends on what you find for a good deal I guess. Just don't limit yourself to only the 4.56.

I saw someone on TTORA selling a complete 4.30 rear axle with 4.30 for about $500. That would be a double win for you if you could get it.
