Reicever hitch weight limits...

Hey everybody! My first post but I've been checking out this website for several months. My whole immediate family, plus extended family are all Toyota nuts. Between us all we have like 7 22re's just in town. My brother's 1985 pickup finally gave up the ghost so my dad gave him my 1982, and gave me his 1990 4runner which he bought new off the dealer floor which I've spent my whole childhood riding in. It's a 22re 5 speed which my dad was an absolute genius for buying it that way new. So now I LOVE this vehicle, It's what should be THE definition of a sport utility vehicle in my opinion, the only problem is I don't have a way to transport my dirtbike anymore. Of course I could just add a receiver hitch and do a dirtbike rack on the back. I've done some searching and couldn't find anything relating to my question, which is would it be able to support a 2 dirtbike rack? I know it should have enough power, but would having that much weight that far behind the rear axles be a very bad idea?

great story! i got my 92 from my dad when he got a 5th gen! love this truck to pieces! never giving it up. so many good memories!

That's total weight of a trailer and cargo. And that's for the 3.0, he has a 22RE.

The OP is talking (I think) about adding a holder that fits in the hitch, like a cargo carrier (or a really big bike carrier )
So that would be equivalent to tongue weight, which would be like 350 lbs total.

I was going to fabricate my own bike carrier to carry 2 dirtbikes without a trailer. My main concern is having that much tongue weight that far behind the rear axles. It may make the suspension squat too much and be unsafe to drive. I'm not so worried about the power issue. My 1982 22r had enough juice to haul 2 bikes without too much trouble, so I'm thinking the 4runner should be okay when it comes to that.

I dont want to pull out my trailer to get my bike out so will be going the hitch hauler route also. Just waiting til a good deal on one pops up

Exactly like that! But I was going to have one with 2 rails for 2 bikes. My wr450 and yz125 to fit on the back. I was just wondering if there is anything i should be concerned about having that much weight hanging pretty far off the back of the vehicle? Like I said, I don't think power should be too much of an issue, more worried about the rear suspension/receiver hitch stuff. It's going to be like ~80 lbs for the rack, ~260 lbs for the wr, and ~200 lbs for the 125. So lets make a rough estimate for 550 pounds. The problem is it's going to be hanging off the back of the car at close to 4 feet. Any concerns with all that leverage?

Haha, get on a steep incline, put her in low range and pop the clutch? I do that stuff in my dad's tractor all the time

The further you go out the more leverage and the weight will increase exponentially.

Why not just get a small trailer?

Ive towed 2 mtn sleds (500lbs each) on a trailer (another 500lbs at least) an elevation of about 5000ft in my 3vze. She didnt like it thats for sure, dropping back to second on some steep winding parts. Had a pretty rough "burning" smell to it when we got there as well. Think ill try and take my mates Dodge next time!!
