Well I applied for, interviewed, and got the internal job posting for a job in Alaska! I'm officially relocating from the city of Chicago to the Anchorage/Eagle River in the next 8-10 weeks. I'm in the oil industry so I'll be traveling to the North Slope 1-2x/month in addition to working in Anchorage.
My wife and I are beyond ecstatic because we're simply over Chicago. Too many people, expensive, little to do outside the food/bar scene. We plan on taking 8-10 days to make the drive from Chicago and the chariot of choice will be my 2007 V8 4Runner with 170k miles.
I'm OCD about maintenance so it's pretty much good to go in that respect. New fluids in everything within the last 15k miles, new brakes, Bilstein 6112's, 18 month old KO2s, etc etc. Mechanically, the truck is as sound as it was when new.
I would like to consider adding the following modifications seeing as this will be used for the road trip and likely multiple off the grid trips once in Alaska.
BEFORE the Trip Modifications.
- ARB Bumper: I like the price, its airbag compliance, and the fact that its designed to protect against animal blows. While I like the Shrockworks, I don't like their wait time.
- LED Light Bar: 20-30" should suffice on the ARB for now. Don't need stupid amount of light - just some supplemental output on long winding roads in the dark etc. etc.
- Satellite Radio: for obvious reasons.
- RAM Mount for my Nexus 7 and offline Maps usage.
- Second and or new battery: can't decide. Toyota battery is 40 months old. Would like the redundancy of a second battery/isolator setup. Electricity is like a foreign language to me so I'll have to read up on how to wire.
- Yakima Load Warrior: Plan on putting 10 gallons of gas and minimal belongings up there. Was going to get typical consumer gas cans. Thoughts?
Recovery Kit: I'm a city slicker so I currently have nothing in my car.
- Fire extinguisher
- 2 Glass Hammers Mounted on DS/PS A-Pillars
- Blankets/Food/First Aid Kit/5 Gallons of Water
- My 200 piece tool set, floor jack, bottle jack, cordless impact gun, spare tire is an obvious
- Recovery Straps
- Flares
- Reflectors
- Gloves: warm and Mechanix
- Tire puncture repair kits x 2
- Jumper cables
- Leatherman
- Flashlights
Anything Else?
I've picked up the Milepost and am watching numerous videos on the Al-Can Highway. We're going to plan our stops accordingly. It's unlikely we are going to camp on the road trip up there. We don't have the gear and are going to appreciate a bed every night.
As it stands, we're tentatively leaving in mid-April so I really only have a few weekends to get everything in order.
I would really appreciate any info/advice/packing/equipment ideas!
Thanks,
Will
Here's the chariot....itching to spread its legs after 170k miles of city/town/highway driving.
