Reman 22re suggestions

I'm looking for a new 22re for my 88 4Runner. I don't need a performance motor, I just want the most reliable engine I can find. I want to do it right and don't mind spending up to about 2,000 (would prefer to spend around 1000-1500) on the best remanufactured engine out there. I don't want to be pulling the thing again in a year! Any suggestions? Seems like Jasper and LCE have good reps, anyone know about Oregon engines, any others to check out? Thanks

LCE is amazing. they make a 1500HP 4 banger (that is turbod) also check out DOA Racing. they make chepaer, and not as race quality engines as LCE, for much cheaper

Well here are your choices. If you have the room to do the pulling yourself then yank it take all components efi and all accessories off. I would also pick up a new tc cover and drop the long block bare off to a machine shop it will probably run you about 1200 to have it completely rebuilt.

I had no location to do the work myself and had to suck it up and pay someone else to do it for me I ended up spending almost 2500 to have it pulled machined and reinstalled...

I am now bored 40 over and between that and complete exhaust system I bet I am probably pushing about 125 maybe 130.. I will admit that I can cruise at 80 much easier then before..

Also another thing replace your radiator with a 3 core.. It will be worth it to make everything new.. any parts store carries the radiator.

I think you mean 150 :D

If I recall correctly, the only LC Engineering engine with EFI quoted for 150 is a stroker (longer stroke on crankshaft). There are questions as to whether or not you can get by with the OEM fuel injection system with that engine. They do sell a very good 135 hp engine and DOA sells an equivalent engine. The DOA price is not much cheaper but a little cheaper....like $3600 vs. $4000. Either one isn't cheap.

I have no experience with the cheaper remanufactured engines so I can't help you there. Your best bet for your budget price is to probably order parts from engnbldr.com and have a good shop rebuild the engine for you.

nope. when i said 1500 with a turbo i mean 1500. its on page 10 of their online pdf catalog. i didnt necessarily mean 1500 hp stock, but that it is readily capable of 1500 as they say. i tried to attach a copy of the pdf catalog, but it wouldnt let me, so please visit their webiste and correct me if im wrong. its on page 10. they machined the entire engine out of billet aluminum them selves, so it has gotta be stroked out the ass. maybe im misunderstanding the catalog, but this is what it says... but keep in mind the 1500hp motor with the turbo and all, will run you like 10 grand to buy it.

You are freaking rediculous to think you could get even 13% of 1500HP on a 22re. Unless LCE is dropping in a Abrams tank turbine engine into your 4runner.....

I can't believe you've got a SAS'd '87, 106 posts, and think anyone is running 1500 HP in a 4runner.

Think about it...Dodge Viper SRT-10 has ~500 HP stock. NASCAR vehicles run about 800 HP.

Remanned 22RE engines go for around $2600 installed around here. Ask me how I know...

And the kicker is that the remanned versions of it are no where near as reliable as the new ones were. I had to completely rebuild the topend of my last one at 15k.

There are a few online companies that offer decent warranties and competitive prices. Let the warranty they offer be your guide.

I keep hearing good things about Oregon engine builder and they ship.

for one, im not freaking ridiculous, and i dont appreciate the bashing. i never once said that i could get 1500 hp out of a 22re. personally i think its impossible.

2, i never once said that you can get 1500 hp out of a 22re. i did say however, that LCEgineering, did build THEMSELVES, a 1500 turboed 4 cyl engine. i never once said that it was a 22re. i did clearly state that they machined the entire engine THEMSELVES out of billet aluminum. so maybe instead of blindly bashing me, follow the instructions you quoted me on, and see what im talking about.

3, that truck you are referring to, isnt mine, its my cousins, and he wanted me to show off his truck. and its not even an 87. its a 84 toy pickup. and i dont think that anyone is running even 10% of 1500hp. you must have misread what i was trying to state.

so for a recap, so you dont get confused and think im a dumbass when im not. i never said you can get 1500hp out of a 22re. i did say that LCEngineering machined a 4cyl engine out of billet aluminum, added some turbos (possibly sequential not twin) that was capable, and has reached 1500hp. please follow my instructions in your quote of me, and you will see what im referring to. have a good day,

granted, you never specified a 22re, but this thread title is "reman 22re suggestions" and you stated it's a 4-banger from LCE. I don't know how I could have mis-understood that?

As to the original poster...any remanufactured 22re for less that $1200 (short block) or $2500 (long block) probably won't have the best reliability. As stated, they just don't come with the best tolerances and attention to detail that you get from the factory.
You may get lucky however.

I beg to differ My machined engine is now almost cresting 2300 miles. The last 600 were accumulated within the last 2 weeks... Most of that was traveling the Hwy went to WPB 2 times and Naples Once.. Granted my tires are cupped and ride like crap at anything above 70 lol but I am going to run them bald or until I become motivated to swap them out for my BFG A/T I have sitting in storage which only have about 3K miles on them lol..

I hope you continue to have great luck with yours. where did you get it from? Did you get it in short- or long-block form?
2300 miles isn't a lot. I'm curious how it's running at 12300 miles.

I think that if you get a decent remanned engine that 50k shouldn't be too unreasonable of an expectation...

But keep in mind that it could go at any time and it's nowhere near as reliable as the factory engine was and you should be fine. I mean look at it this way, once your engine goes it's really your only option...

there is other options besides a remanned engine that will skyrocket your power, but installing your original engine is much easier than pairing it with another. i have heard stories of chevy small block 350's or chev 4.3L v6's being shoehorned into the engine bay of a small tiny 4runner. but the swap that has been gaining in popularity in yota circles, is the supra engine swap. either the 5MGE(T) or the 7MGE(T). i am planning on doing a 7MGET swap in the spring. if anyone has any questions, please dont hesitate to PM me and i will be more than happy to supply an arsenal of info. thanks

Actually, the Toyota 3.4L swap fit the best with just a little hole in the hood on a stock truck, the Chevy 4,3L fits well too with a suspension lift recommended but not absolutely necesarry, and I honestly wouldn't even consider the SBC a shoe horn, but it does help if you have a suspension lift and a body lift on the truck if you go that route. Out of all of those, the Toyota 3.4L seems to be about the most popular and has the best aftermarket support from what I've seen, and with an available SC power seems to be up there as well. All of the adapters for the 4.3L and SBC swap are commercially produced and available for a reasonable fee too, which also brings that swap option down to the reach of the hobbyist.

The supra engine is definitely gaining popularity from what I've seen too. Certain versions of it bolt right up to a W56 and it's a decent fit in the engine bay. This is popular with the supra crowd and those that want more power while keeping all toyota, which has never really been a big deal to me. It's a great swap, but looks very expensive and involved from the ones I've seen done.

The beauty of the SBC swap is price and availability of parts. If assembled correctly they're reliable too. If I was going to do one I'd probably do a 350 SBC with a TH350 tranny. If you use the advanced adapters adapters in the swap supposedly you can keep the stock driveshafts and the speedo even still works as the sensor is xfer case mounted. With a mild build, 250hp should be easily attainable with a nice flat torque curve, and if you even get bored you can double that for less than a rebuilt 22RE costs.

There are plenty of other options out there, but for the money and trouble that's involved with a swap you have to really love your truck to do one because you'll never get your money back out of it. For most people it isn't really even an option to do, which is why I rarely ever mention it.

Downey makes an excellent engine swap guide that they'll send you free for the asking if you call them. It's well written and opens your eyes up to a bunch of things that I know I never even considered.
