Remote keyless entry stops working intermittently

I have a 2001 SR5 with factory keyless entry. For the past three years, the remote keyless entry works just fine, albeit the range is short compared to most cars made within the last five years, but I guess that’s just an old tech vs. new tech problem.

Recently, my remote fob will not lock or unlock the car intermittently. The key fob’s battery is brand new, and has a good voltage (CR2016 showing up 3.04v, which is healthy). I’ve also tried to re-program the remote. The symptom still exists, and there’s no rhyme, reason, or pattern when this issue occurs. What could be the cause, and where do I start looking? Have you checked the wire loom going from the body to the rear hatch for broken wires?

Second this, the "brains" of the remote system live in the hatch and those wires are Especially prone to breaking.

Thanks! I will definitely check it through this week. Any specific areas where the wires are prone to fail? The area underneath the black boot attached to the hatch, perhaps?
