remote start and 6 disk cd changer aftermarket?

Hello, a couple of questions...

1. Remote start? How much would this cost aftermarket and will I be able to use all the features on my original keyless entry pad. For example will I still be able to roll the rear window down with my remote keyless entry?

2. If I were to get a single disk cd player originally and then spent the same amount of money on an aftermarket 6disk changer what kind of product would I get. I've heard the factory installed players are kinda crappy. Btw, do you guys know if the factory installed 6disk can play MP3s?

Remote start I have seen way under a hundred bucks: you will need to shop around, and being that you are not buying stock chances are you will need a seperate key pad, but I might be wrong.

I got that when I bought the vehicle and they blend it in the price of the car so I didn't feel the rip off :D

I just installed a remote start in my 03 Sport 4wd. Unfortunately, the tech sheets are not very good yet on these. You will need to give up one of your spare keys if it is an 03 or 04. For just a basic remote start with keyless and the rear window (couldn't find the correct wire for that one on mine..) you are probably looking around $250 or so for a decent one....installed that is. Let me know if you have any ?'s....
 
We have a remote start on our Grand Cherokee and I suspect my wife is going to really miss that feature--we have a garage, but at work she used to start the Jeep from her office window before going out to the parking lot. For the Jeep we have a DEI system installed by Circut City http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&catoid=-8867&qp=0&bookmark=bookmark_0&oid=83461 It was on sale for about $200 installed and includes an alarm with shock sensor, etc.

One thing to consider on the '03+ is the vehicle immobilizer that uses "chipped" keys so that even if the ignition is powered (hacked/bypassed), it won't start unless the computer sees the signal from the key. In order to use a remote start they will have to take one of your spare keys and install an ignition simulator that makes it look like you always have a chipped-key in the ignition, effectively disabling the immobilizer feature. If they do use an ignition simulator make sure they *bury* the alarm brain and similulator somewhere in the car. If it's right under the dash you might as well tape a key under your dash for crooks to use.

Though it does depend on each store a general rule is...
STAY AWAY from circuit city and best buy. I have the clifford RS3 system in my truck. I love mine, I had some initial key fob problems, but they fixed those at no charge. The system also comes with multiple extra outputs for window rolling/turn on stereos pretty much whatever you little heart desiers. The cool thing about my setup which isn't really nesissary, but neat is that its 2-Way. I know if my truck is getting broken into, if its running etc.
Now, the thing you need to decide if you want just remote start, or if you want an alarm with that. Just remote start, I would go with CodeAlarm. They are really cheap, but if you need the security also, then go with a bigger name like Clifford/Alpine.
I don't think any car company is selling mp3 cd players. There aren't too many changers that do that either. I had an alpine 6 disk in my rear compartment and it worked great. Not sure what you will need to get if you want to keep your stock headunit (ie cd player) though. I got a new system for christmas and went with kenwood b/c I got a free sirius tuner and now I have an mp3 deck up front and endless cd quality muisc instead of a changer.
 
It does depend on the store, but Circuit City requires all it's installers to become MECP (Mobile Electronics Certified Professional I think....It's like ASE for mechanics) certified (Best Buy and Mom n Pops typically don't) I would ask who ever you choose if they are certified, if they aren't, walk away. As for the a recomendation for a starter, DEI is the largest security company in the world (they own Clifford now) I have worked with them for years and they are pretty much bullet proof. Support is good too. Oh and Ian was right, you will need to give up a key and use a DEI 555U bypass module for the remote starter. Let me know if you have any questions.

why do you have to give up a key? Is it because of a chip being in the key and needs to be near the vehicle to start it?
 
Yes, there is a chip in the key. Basically the ignition has a receiver on it, when the correct key is inserted, it reads the key, then it allows the fuel system to turn on. When you give up a key, it goes in a transponder box that is mounted way under the dash, with a ring that is placed around the ignition. This ring transmits the correct resistance of the key to the ignition only when the remote start is acvtivated. You just have to make sure the key is hiden well!!!!
 
Do 3rd gen. 4runners have to give up a key if they wanted a remote starter? My runner has the security system that came with the car from the factory, so i think all i want is the remote starter.......know where i can buy one? And can i install it myself?
 
No you don't. I didn't in my 98 and I believe we have the exact same security system. But, either way I have never heard that toyotas have transmitters in their keys.
 
I think some of the late 3rd gen's had it (maybe 2001 and 2002 and possibly 2000). The keys for the ones that have the transmitter are very fat plastic at the top. All '03 and up 4Runners have the transmitter imbedded in the keys.
 
Heres a pic of my 1999 4runner's key and security device, does it have the transmitter?

How easy of an install is this?
Is there a superior brand/model remote starter?
Any drawbacks to having this?

Any help is appreciated.....

Does that mean that the key does have a transmitter? If it does, then i dont think i want the remote starter because im actually losing a safety feature. But if i dont have it to begin with, then id feel fine installing one.

Oh, and which is the best out of all those sites you listed? They all look good but i dont know much about remote starters.
