Remote Start and Alarm System

I found this on ebay...I dont have any experience on remote sarters or alarms but I think it is a pretty good deal. After waking up this morning and seeing everything covered in snow I am seriously thinking on buyin a remote starter...I really hate getting into the car and everything its frozen cold. I always wanted to have a remote start but never got to make the final decision.

Should I get it?....I really dont wanna spend a lot of money on this. they even have one with no alarm at half of this price.

I'd also like a remote start, but too many other issues right now. From the EZ Start website:

so you need to find out if that's included, and do you have an extra key. I'm sort of thinking of zip-tying a key to the back of the ignition switch for this and other reasons, might get away with a $50 remote start with that method.
 
Thanks for the reply...yeah I have 2 extra keys . I will email the seller about that bypass. Or I may just go with the remote starter. Whichever is less complicated.

I need to look into this more, but I'm curious if this alarm uses any factory sensors? I don't even know what sensors my 4R has. I know it has a hood opening sensor, but does it have glass breakage sensors or motion detectors? I didn't read about any in the manual.
 
The zip-tieing key idea sounds good in theory but doesn't always work.

I tried it with my sister in laws Nissan Frontier, the previous owner lost the original keys and got new ones and had to get the truck reprogrammed to work with them. When they did that they rendered the bypass for the remote start obsolete so didn't work anymore. I figured to do the zip tie idea with her spare key. The only place it worked was basically the same place the key would be if it were in the ignition anyways, on the outside of the dash basically at the face of the ignition. It only had about a 1/2 inch of play from that location and any other place it would not work. I tried all around the ignition behind the dash and nothing else would work.

She didn't want to pony up the extra dough to get it done properly so she never did get it fixed.

Just thought I'd let you know that the key idea may not work so a person may have to do the proper bypass. I don't know how a person could try it ahead of time though.

Yeah, I could try it at the dealership if they wanted to be cooperative, but they haven't in the past.

One of my Land Cruiser keys snapped, so the head was separate from the key. And just like you say, the chip had to be pretty close to where the key goes in the ignition. I wonder how the bypass module gets that transponder signal to the ECU...?
 
How the system works is a little beyond my technical abilities.

I know with hers (it was an AutoStart system) there was a black box that was seperate than the rest of the system for the bypass. I beleive the wires from that went to the ignition so I'm thinking it would send the signal to the ignition to make it appear the key was in the ignition.

Again, beyond my abilities so I could be way off the mark but that is kind of what I figured how it made it work.
 
I have a Viper alarm with Remote start- it was quite a bit more but it allowed for some customization- ie. I can still roll down back window (and roll it up with the keyfob), I can turn on the defroster when I start the car and there are quite a lot of other features.

Also- if you are an iphone user- check out Vipers Smartstart. Its also pricey (about $499 installed and only Best Buy has it) but it allows you to use your iphone to start, unlock, lock and panic your car. I dont have this option as Im a bit of a security tight person -ie if someone steals your phone or has your phone unlock code, they have your car. also, dont know how this effects when you valet your car if the valet only has the valet key.

Overall- I LOVE having the starter. I use it daily. I didnt think I would- I use it in the hot california weather in the desert during the summer and when it rains or is cold in the winter.

in case anyones interested, theres a guy in the classified section selling a viper 5301 remote/alarm for 125 including shipping. they retail for about 175-200 i think.

Julie, dont waste your money on that POS. that brand is an off brand. Get a Viper, it will be well worth the money and you will love every minute of the security. The remote start system for the viper has a box they attach to the alarm brain which makes a copy of your transponder in the key, instead of having to leave a key in the car. With that system you have, the key being inside the car attached to the remote start box will cause the key in chime to activate when the drivers door is open regardless if you have the actual key in the ignition. Also, the viper has a guarantee that if something gets stolen they will pay you up to a certain amount. I personally have a viper and its the most reliable alarm i've owned on a car. So try and stay away from that cheap s***

Hey...thanks for the advice...I dont have a clue about this things ..thats why i posted it to get some opinions. But chaz just posted about a viper for sale on the class section. and its brand new. I hope it still be available..I wont have the money until next week.

no problem, i dont like seeing a fellow T4R owner have their truck trashed by a crappy alarm. i baby my truck, i do my best to use name brand things when it comes to crucial items like security.

and im shocked you dont have an alarm\remote start yet
 
remote start 4runner 2003

I got a remote start installed in my 4runner.
Then i found out the bad news. I have everything integrated into a single after market FOB and now I've lost my beeps for lock and unlock as well as panic.

The FOB i bought supports these things but the installer Aspen Sound said they couldn't integrate it and there is no after market product that would provide all this capability. I would have to go back to using the toyota fob. I'm wondering if this is true.

I don't want 2 FOBs. It seems like something should be available out there.
 
i had the installer code my 2 stock fobs to work with mine so i could still have the rear window feature. if one breaks, ive still got the other as a backup. the fobs that came with my AVITAL alarm/remote seemed cheaply made compared to the toyota ones. 2 years & no problems yet, not bad for 130 installed.

How much is the average installation fee for this?...and...do I need a bypass for this Python unit?....
