Remote Start-Even dealer said go after market!

I have the factory RS and thinking about an aftermarket too. Its getting bone shivering cold here and i have to literally stand 15-10 ft to start this thing which defeats the purpose of having a RS. I might as well hop in there and start it. And yes i just installed a new remote battery.

I'm having the same problem with the one that came with my 2011. Its a python and worked quite well last winter but now that the cold has come back around its barely working with from half a block away. I even tried switching out the batteries.

had i been able to program the bypass i probably would have installed it, i'm fully capable and have installed a few before. Since it was new i expected a professional installation to avoid these issues, unfortunately that was not the case. It is a small local shop (audiovox deale)r so I chose not to get them play around with it anymore as they were obviously not qualified and would not have the ability to request another tech or complain to corp.

The 4runner uses can-bus so its really a minimal installation, 3 wires at the odb port and then wire the remote start to the ignition and really thats about all.

It still infuriates me to this day but i'd rather fix it properly than take it back. :sniper:

Perhaps I missed it, but has anyone really even mentioned their experiences with anything but factory? I'm looking at a few options, and I'd love to get folks' perspective on the brands and models. I'm in a TEP, so no smart key.

1. Compustar Slice JR/902 -- the 902 offers more range (3K ft), and is Drone compatible. The Slice JR is just really small, and is also Drone compatible. I believe the slice offers 2K ft range.
2. Viper 4806V -- Even better range (1 mi), though I'm not sure I need it. Also, Drone sort of makes this moot. Seems to be on par with the 902, except I cannot get a good deal on install to save my life.
3. Encore -- don't know these guys well...

There are probably others, but this is sort of my narrowed list. I have a local dealer that knows his stuff that'll do a 902 for about $360 out the door (seems fair). The Viper will cost me $450ish, and the slice JR is about $340 out the door. All of these are 2-way systems -- a must in MN.

I'm thinking that for the money the 902 looks best on paper. I don't love making my keychain bigger by carrying another fob, but what can you do?...

Also, side note... Hilarious that some of these RS units will only allow you to open the driver's door while started (and kill the engine when the door is opened). I can only imagine how well that would go over with my wife in January (aka November in MN this year) as we walk to the car and she waits while I get in, twist the key, depress the brake, and hit the unlock button...all while she freezes outside the car. She'd be pleased...

I am a recent fan of the Compustar brand. I just installed a full Compustar alarm/RS on my '14. My OEM key fobs still work and can also control the alarm/RS in addition to the Compustar fobs and the Drone mobile app on my phone. This was the first Compustar system I had ever installed but I was very impressed how well it was built and the flexibility it gives you.

I installed primarily DEI stuff (mostly Avital, same as Viper, Clifford, Python, etc) from 2001-2009 and I can tell you from just one install the Compustar stuff is better. Poor DEI quality and customer service was one reason I quit installing back in 2009.

Here is what I installed in my '14:

-rf-ftx1400 remotes (2 of them)
-ft-7000 brain
- DAS sensor
-blade al transponder interface
-touch tps
-drone mobile module (works on our smart phones)
- temperature sensor

Most dealers go with aftermarket systems anyway. Buddy of mine who used to work at a stereo shop now does this full time. He goes to dealers and installs aftermarket indash gos headunits, rear view cams, radar systems and remote starts. He has a mobile service and at times will do 10-20 cars in a couple day span. It's just easier, cheaper and at times much better than oem systems.

I have a 2012 Limited and my dealer included remote start as part of the deal. They used Python - older version of:

I love this thing. Never had any issues with it. I can start my car from my office on the 5th floor, while my truck is in concrete covered parking. The range is insane. The car shuts off when you open the door - so don't have to worry someone driving away with it. I also like the extra modules you can buy for it. I bought tilt sensor for it (have yet to install it tho) in case someone tries to jack my tires/rims.

I'll clarify compustar's product mix.

there are only 3 main systems

CM6300 platform is a alarm only system
CM7000 platform is a alarm and starter combo system
CM7200 platform is a starter only platform

You choose your platform and choose your remote you want to pair with it. Its litterally that simple.

With the 3 platforms mentioned above, you can use any remote you want with it, thus making tons of possibilities. Only Pro dealers get the premium remotes,

Now compustar also makes the LTX series, its their cheaper line that is limited in its remotes and feature setup. limited in installs and limited in optional accesories.

Not when its remote started....keyless is disabled when the motor is running.

Correct, if you were using a Compustar system with a ADS or fortin module

Keyless entry is not disabled with factory remote start. Sure the engine shuts off when you hit the unlock button but it is not disabled. If yours is, something is wrong with it.

I'm in Portsmouth,Va. about 15-20 miles from Va. Beach. The problem is not driving somewhere, the problem is if it needs service. I checked the dealer locator and nearest one is 70 miles away.

If you read my original post, I don't have a starter yet installed. The very nature of my post was to solicit advice on which product may work best. The comment I made about not being able to unlock the doors -- driver's side only -- came from reading about some of the junk systems out there. I remarked that the fact that the car shuts off is hilarious. It's not literal.

The 6300 system is alarm only? I could have sworn compustar at packages it with the 2WG9s I was looking at...

Its not really misinformation. It is info about multiple remote start options all mixed in one thread.

I have aftermarket remote start that inputs from the OEM remote, which the remote stops responding once the truck is running.

It would unlock the doors once running if you use a unit that has its own remote or a toyota oem solution.
