Removal of Crossbars

I tried taking the star bolts off the bars. However, that only lets the bars slide back and forth in the track. I'm thinking that you have to take off the rails and slide the crossbars off the ends. But I don't know how to take the rails off the roof. The are packaged quite tightly and I don't want to mess with them before I have to.

You know I never took the crossbars off, so I thought that they just bolt in and if you loose for bolts they are moving, but if you take them out, they will fall of. As you described, probably you're right. I just checked mine 4Runner and found that the ends of the rails are closed by plastic covers, so they have to be removed. I tried one at the rear and it pulled off. Looks like it has some sort of fasteners. I also unscrewed two bolts from the bottom of rails near that cover. May be it helps you. Well I finally got the crossbars off. What you have to do is to take off the end plastic caps. Once the caps are off the rails just slide off. To take the caps off you need a small puddy knife (metal) or some other flat surface tool (larger than a screw driver). You insert the tool between the rubber seal and the pastic cap. Slowly and carefuly you wiggle the knife up and down and across. While doing this you use your fingers to pull off the cap. There are four small hooks holding on the cap. The first one took about 10 minutes to get off, the second about 5. They reattached in seconds. The bars came off easily.
