removal of OLD tint

Ok, well I tried to take the tint off the rear splitting windows and all I got to come off without killing myself for 5 hours was a clear piece on all 4 sliders, and then the actual tint was underneath. The clear came up REAL EASY, lift a corner and the rest just peeled right off, the tint however..... no sir!
Has anyone tried removing tint from the 1st gen runner? This shit is probably twenty years old :roadkill:

for easy at home fixes just spray with ammonia cover and let sit for a long time, i'd say apply it in he morning and leave until late afternoon early eve. then try to peel it off in the largenst peices possible, if you cant get it in one peice dont worry but larger peices will prevent having to clean up glue and be much faster.

after that there will sometimes be a glue residue left over i find best thing for removing the glue is a degreaser and razor blades

what you do is spray a good coat of degreaser on the window let it soak in then scrap away the glue (make sure you have A LOT of paper towels handy) do not use razors on lexan or any plastic windows just repeat the process until the glue is gone. the glue should come off pretty easy

This shit is really stuck on good.
And afaik there are no plexi/lexan windows on these rigs right? so a fresh set of razor blades wouldnt be bad idea right...?
Getting her to my specs is a slow SLOW prcoess, but im enjoying it

ps- not worried about the glue, its the tint itself. i have goo gone for the glue! fvck, maybe it'll work on the tint???

Another cheap trick to use is to apply an ammonia based cleaner as mentioned and then take a black garbage bag and cover the window and the cleaner when it's still wet. Let it sit for ~an hour or so in the hot sun and then peel back the bag and have at it with a razor blade. That usually loosens up all the tint and glue so it comes off much easier.

stock windows are glass not plexi so no worries there

I could get a window clean (film + adhesive) with no special degreaser or "speedy white" in 5 minutes or less.

This would be for your average tinted window that hasn't bubbled up or turned purple. If the film is too old and is in bad shape, it tends to flake off the window during removal. This would cause removal to take longer.

The rear window takes a bit longer, but that's if you're saving defroster lines. If the tint is in bad shape, you won't be able to save the defroster lines. Actually, if the film is in decent shape, it'll be easier and won't take as long to remove it from a rear windshield rather than film in bad shape where you have to sacrifice defroster lines.

this is definitely the case here, im gonna go buy some fresh blades here in a little bit and try again with some 'potion'. I havent looked the rear yet as far as if I should remove it....... or the shape of the defroster lines. I guess it wouldnt be a huge deal if they get messed, as my switch isnt connected anyway. Ill deal with it when i get there. Thanks again brus

I have used a hand held steamer and plastic razor blades in the past. It is the cleanest and odorless process I've tried.

Just hold the steamer up to the tint and let it warm up. Pull one edge of the tint and slowly pull. You can use the plastic razor blade to scrape the glue while it's hot and it comes right off. Goo Gone can be used to remove any left over glue.

I used metal razor blades though, the plastic wasnt doing anything.....

**edit** finished the sliders in two hours, first one took me 45 minutes and by then i had a technique....
about to do the windshield banner and contemplate the rear windshield...... idk

front windshield banner took fifteen minutes, rear windshield took 2 hours
I was sitting in the back of my truck huddled up indian style sweating my fvcking ass off! 100% humidity and mid-low 80s at night..... my truck doubled as a sauna today, but SHE IS TOTALLY TINT FREE, for now...... a fresh layer will be layed before too long prob 15%tint all around
