Removal of Runningboards

I'm about to take mine off, but i need to know how to take off the fender flares. it would look ridiculous with flares and no boards for them to connect to.

anybody know of a link that has directions for FENDER removal? i can only find this one...

EDIT: I know what to do, yet the first bolt above the runningboard end on the front will not budge. its like the bolt was put on top of the clip! i dont know how to get it out...

well.. on the front there are 2 bolts and 2 nuts, only 1 bolt and 1 nut will turn since the other bolt and other nut are welded onto to running boards, icant remember what bolt and nut is welded but try switching it around, as for the fendersall you have to do is remove the bottom screw inside the fender well and it should slide down and out with the running board... hope that helps a bit

Hey, my first post!

I was going to try and clarify to you how to remove the fender flares, but it looks like you figured it out.

As far as the running boards go, it's simple. Get on your back and look up underneath the boards- you'll see three mounting points. Each mounting bracket has four bolts- two of which can actually be removed (the other two are welded studs, you just remove the nuts).

I have a Makita impact driver, so I put on my 3/8" socket end adapter and the right socket (don't remember the size). With some patience, the impact driver was able to dislodge the bolts/nuts without any problems. Keep in mind water has been contacting the hardware for years, so it won't be easy to remove.

No impact driver? I suggest using your socket driver on there (the longer the handle the better) and use a mallet to hammer on the end of the handle. Repeated low impact blows will roughly simulate an impact driver and, with any luck, the bolts/nuts will ultimately give.

it does look a bit off to have the fender flares w/out running boards. Just an FYI, you can order front mud flaps that match the rear ones. Do a search of my posts and you should find it.

that's the way i bought mine .... not sure if it had them, or is suppose to have them. If anything i'm leaning towards making some sliders to go in place of some running boards, of course w/ my to do list, this should happen in about a hundred years

I don't think the the op has the Limited/sport flares (larger and painted to match) but has the smaller black fender flares. Without the boards on 4Runner with the smaller black flares there is a small piece of flare that is missing behind the front wheel well. There are mudflaps that you can buy that look nice and fill this gap, but I'm pretty sure that they are actually Tacoma flaps.

oh ok..thanks for claryifying,,I have the limited flares and took off my running boards yesterday and thought it looked good so it kind of threw me off lol..The only complaint I have is that now the running boards are off I can see a bunch of stuff under the truck.
