Removing a 3.4 from 97 4Runner 4x4 auto

Concerning the crossover pipe.

I have already taken the heads off, (they were cracked) and decided to go with a JDM replacement.
My question is...

It is better to install the exhaust cross-over pipe before I re-install the engine? I have taken the crossover pipe off and it was fairly easy since I did not have the heads on.

Any info would be helpful.

yes!

Most definitely you have to place the cross over pipe before you put the engine in the truck. Also, place the starter on the frame before you place the engine in the truck. You cant get the starter in unless you first remove the Tranny dip stick pipe. I elected not do this as its a pain to replace after the engine is in. At least replace the starter contacts as well--- its cheap/easy/quick insurance.

When you get the JDM I can almost guarantee that the components will not be compatible with your 4R. Check out my Replacement:

I put both engines on stands and systematically transferred components--- after cleaning, and also replacing seals and gaskets. I also replaced the timing belt and water pump--- it is really easy to do this with the engine sitting in front of you!

That is what I kind of thought since even with the heads off, I have to wiggle it this way and that way to get it out of the truck.

And YES, I did notice the subtle differences between the two engines. I got another engine stand to do exactly what you are referring.
