While dealing with replacing the rotors and cv shafts on my 92 4runner. I ran into difficulty trying to get the cover of the hub off. After removing the nuts and washers there were cone washers still holding it in place. I spent 4 hours tapping and prying to 6 off on one side. Then went to my local NAPA to get a pair of spring washer pliers and my guy there told me trick:
The two threaded holes on the front of the hub cover are there for a reason. Take two 8mm x1.25 bolts (they are the red ones in pic below) and thread em in those holes until you hit the hub underneath then add a few more lbs of torque to get some back pressure on the cone washers. Once you got tension on it all you have to do is give the surface of the hub cover a forceful tap with an socket extension right next to the washer (pointing at the spot with screwdriver) and it the cone washer will pop right out.
Amazing - first 6 took 4 hours and I practically destroyed the washers. the second 6 took 4 min and not a scratch.
