Not sure about your state, but in mine the parking brake is checked every year when inspected. If it doesn't work, you're not going to pass.

Having had not one, but two, brake line failures while driving in the city (within the last little while), I might re-think removal of the parking brake.

Sure, it is no emergency brake as it was in much older vehicles, but when my foot went to the floor when pushing the brake pedal and I felt little resistance I was happy to be able to activate the parking brake to be able to stop my 4Runner.

good point

And if you ever get in a situation of having to park on a serious hill/incline, best to have it to apply while parked.
Hate to have all that pressure on the pin in the tranny to hold it.

See post #17 in the Service Manual Download 4th Gen sticky.

Its for an 06, looks like it works, it pulled down the zip file for me a minute ago.

Dealer never could get mine to work (twice under warranty, once I paid $70)
It sorta works, very weak hold. Will not hold any incline at all.

Why not just fix it, instead? It's a damn simple mechanism.

This^^^

If you can't fix it yourself, I would not leave the dealer until I was 100% satisfied. It should hold on a hill, both of mine do. It may roll a slight bit but should hold on a hill. It is only hard to work on in the sense that, there is not much room between the drum and hub.

And i was trying to install my new rotors and rear pads and for the life of me the rotor wont come off
And i can see the one spring is gone
So i am assuming its all corroded and broken in there

I did my moms brakes on her FJ last week. It has 66k miles, brakes were so corroded it was ridiculous! The guide pins that hold the front pads in were so built up with rust I had to heat, beat, heat, and use a nail punch to get them out. The rears were just as bad and the parking brake kept binding up and popped one of the springs holding the shoe on during the process. Make sure you loosen your parking brake through that adjustment hole so that they are as loose as possible, then use the bolts to push the rotor off. Personally, next time I do my brakes I am ditching the parking brake. I never use it, ever, it isn't even adjusted to do anything, and it is just a serious pain in my @ss! lol

**** parking brakes
End of story
