Removing Running Boards Tomorrow..

I plan on taking off the ol' running boards tomorrow and giving her a good vacuum on the inside and possibly a wash while i'm at it (shes kind of muddy/dirty at the momment). my dad broke their digital camera so i'm not sure if i will be able to post any real quality pictures besides my cell phone. hopefully we can go to the mall and pick up a new one.

any tips or suggestions while i'm getting her pretty again? i might go to autozone or o'reily's while i'm out in town, anything i should pick up while i'm there? i might try to see if they have any 74 LEDs so i can maybe even swap my dash over to blue to.

I took mine off 2 days ago in preparation for my lift. It makes it look 10 times better. It automatically makes it look lifted. They are on ebay if anyone is interested.
 
yea i know what you mean, the stance is alot better now. i'm not sure yet if i should cut off the mud flaps too or leave them. cell phone pictures was the best i could do but hopefully they will turn out ok tomorrow when i actually have service to send them to my computer. i'm thinking about getting some black nerf bars now.

took my dad about 20 minutes to take off the boards and that is counting him looking for the tools.

took me about 2 hours and 30 minutes to wash, clean, and vacuum her out. she looks so much better and i actually have CHROME tips again instead of dirty brown ones :bigok:
 
So today I finally got around to taking off the running boards. At first I wasn't sure if I really liked it or not, but after awhile it is starting to grow on me. Later on in the afternoon I decided while I was at it I would give her a good washing and vacuum. The best part of the whole wash was making my exhaust tips CHROME once again :D. My dad broke the digital camera so the best I could use for the after shots are from my cell phone camera.

You may also notice some other new additions like tint, vent shades, bug shield, clear corners and bumpers. I also removed some of the stickers from my back glass and the chrome liscense plate frame that some people didn't really like. anymore suggestions on what to do next guys please let me know! :bigok:

i know man, i should be getting my brush guard for my birthday so i will have that by this time next month. not sure on what fogs i'm gonna get to mount on them yet. ours will sorta look like mixed twins when i get mine put on (to bad mine is the 2WD one though )i also ordered some TRD decals to for the sides.
 
Yeah man that sounds good. I am thinking about getting the TRD Offroad Stickers sometime. And they do look alike, except mine wouldnt be caught dead with a University of Alabama sticker on the back.:biggrin2:

Actually I dont have one though. I have a Polo horse on the left bottom corner, one in the middle top that says "4stunner" and one on the bottom right that says "Jeep Killer"
 
Is there any advantage in terms of off-roading that taking off the running boards gives you? I hear alot of people talk about it but I never know if it is just for looks or not.

Well running boards dont do anything but collect mud, and without them its alot easier to clean the underside.
 
Running boards also don't take kindly to geting a rock under them since they will bend like a $5 hooker.

Without them you get more clearance up to the body but a set of sliders is still a good idea to protect the body and hopefully I'll have a set soon.

How hard was it to take them off? Only 8 bolts keep them on, and seeing as yours is almost as old as mine, I'm sure they gave you some difficulty. Then again...your car probably hasn't been exposed to as much salt as mine.
 
very easy to take off, my dad did them for me and it took all but 20 minutes i'd say.

but you are probably right as i'm sure my 4runner has not been exposed to near as much salt as yours.

I just removed mine last week, after having run them for 11 years in New Brunswick, Canada (tons of salt and rust, etc. around here).

I scraped off the undercoating around them and put some WD-40 on them twice in the morning leading up to when i would take them off. All I used was a socket wrench and a normal wrench for the nut. I used a piece of 2x4 against the socket wrench and truck so I could really lean on it and not have it slip off.

Shouldn't be much of a problem.
