Removing shifter grip

Anyone done this or can it be done. The grip on my 2001 SR5 shifter is getting a little "gummy" so I thought I would investigate replacing it. I am talking about the black grip on the shifter handle not the entire handle.

do you have a picture that you could maybe pull off google or something and be a little more specific as to what part is getting gummy?

Long story short, ive seen the top portion of shifters in 01's go for $35 to $100 depending on what you want(ie, used, new, aftermarket, stock)

No picture but it is the rubber grip that your hand goes around when you move from park to drive. It looks like I could cut it off with a knife but I don't want to try anything until I understand if I can add a new grip. The old grip looks like it is very securely attached. Just pulling up doesn't yield anything.

This is one shifter i found. Assuming its for the 3rd gen because of the style and no other 4runner has that style shifter(i don't think).

I would consult a local dealer first, they may not be too helpful over the phone so if its possible to go and show them what your talking about.

That's about all i can recommend unless someone else chimes in.

I think you are right that that one would work. I think it looks good too.

Now to figure out how to remove the old one.

yea i cant find anything on removing the shifter itself but i will try when my sis gets back with the 4runner. If it does comes off it has to either be twist off or something under the 'P''R''N''D' stuff

From looking at the diagram there is what looks like a set screw holding it on. I looked at mine and can feel them . It's too cold to start removing them tonight but the screw would explain why it doesn;t pull off.
