Removing sport bumper trim

Anyone take theirs off? Is it hard to do? Does it leave a ugly hole or is there something to cover it up with?

I remember reading in an earlier post that it leaves holes in your front bumper. So if you plan on taking it off, think twice unless you spend the money for a new bumper cover.

It leaves two holes in each side of your bumper and they are noticeable. When I had my original sport bumper damaged, I did not want it replaced with another one but I had no choice because I didn't like the holes.

Here you go..long story short:

If you remove it you will have 2 small holes on each side of your front end. The good news is that you can paint some carraige bolts to match and they will cover it perfectly.

Mine was damaged when I rear-ended my girlfriend (yes, we've already beat that joke to death on a different thread). The damage was beyond the trim itself.

In the following pic, you can see just how well the paint I found matches the grey trim. If you have painted trim, I'm sure you could match it. If it were not for the existing damage, I would be happy with this fix. Unfortunately, I will have to replace my front bumper cover.

I picked up some carraige bolts at Home Depot, cut them to a shorter length, sanded them, primed them, painted them (several coats), and mounted them. The mounting is pretty simple. I also had to slightly widen the holes to fit the bolts through. 2 washers (because of the square part) and a nut in the back.

You will have a lot more room to work if you remove the metal bumper trim mounts behind the bumper.

Do you think the sport bumper provided any protection or do you think having it on your truck caused more damage? Your fix looks good but not good enough to take my sport bummer off on my own I will wait until mine gets damaged. Thanks

I don't think it provided any protection. May have cause more damage. The car I hit was a Honda and did not have any damage, at all. I actually like the look of the Sport Bumper Trim, just not fact that it is a cheap piece of platic for $400. Waiting until you damage it is a good idea.

I think your right I could have the insurance cover a new sport bumper trim and then not have the repair shop install one which would cover my $500 deductable.

OK... it is bitter cold here (10 degrees today) and I want to remove my cracked bumper trim as quickly as possible. I see there are some bolts underneath but wanted to know how easy it is to access the inner bolts. Can anyone just fill me in on the bolt hole locations and anything special I should know. Thanks.

FWIW, i took my sport bumper off after someone backing into me.. i used the carridge bolts but wasnt satisfied.. i got a new lower front bumper cover from the dealer for only ~$70.. install took me about an hour.
