removing the cat

so I went down to talk to our exhaust guy and he said that he could get about a 15 hp bump if he does a complete exhaust system, headers and all. he said that we could remove the cat because Oregon's emissions laws are lower than California in low population areas. I have had a number of old cars mostly carbed and would like to stay away from the old car no cat stink. for those of you that removed your cats, have you had this problem? or because they are fuel injected did it not make much of a difference? he said if we keep the stock manifold a hp increase of 4 is about all we can get.

I know this topic just keeps going but I like to research a lot before I make a decision like this.

5hp yes 10hp maybe 15 i don't think so.
your not gaining any horsepower your freeing it up.

doing a full system is a good way to get power but i would look at your local laws to make sure he is allowed to remove the cat completely. It doesn't sound right in my opinion.
 
You can't gain HP without doing something to the intake as well. Freeing up HP is a good way of putting it. As for your question, sorry, Im no help.
 
OK, so doing a cat back is the way to go. this makes me happier because I did not want to modify the emissions system. and 110 hp is better than 105 hp.

no no no.

you DO want a header!!!! its the most important part of freeing horsepower.
So you do a header, hi flow cat, flow-master or equivalent muffler with 2 inch pipe the hole way, if you do this you'll be very happy and the engine will free as much as possible.
 
my understanding of the the header systems available was that the EGR needed to be disconnected. Wouldn't this make it not pass smog?

and in your experience, how much would a system like that cost. The guy who I took the car to and made the 15 hp cleaim gave me a quote of around $700 for custom headers with dynomax super turbo muffler 18" resonator with the stock cat.

Unless you are in portland i would get rid of the cat. I,m in florence and had my complete exhaust done a few years ago (had the cat removed) and haven't noticed any bad smell.
 
Great, I have read mixed reviews on the pace setter. Many people have said they use thin tubing, and have had fittment issues. I am going to talk to the exhaust guy again and see if he can't put in a bung for the egr and delete the cat.

Why are we talking about EGR ports on a header? Do you mean air injection for a carbed 22r? Maybe you mean oxygen sensor?
 
He is right it is not an EGR tube it is an air injections system both carb and injection had them, turbos how ever did not. I have a Pace Setter and it fit with relative ease. Couple of things I did, had bend the injection tube up to clear the headers (no big), at the collector the flanges are free floating (they spin) so I welded them in place were I wanted them ( this and using a copper gasket kept the gasket from blowing out. Lastly was the final bend where everything goes in the collector was not a prefect 90, so I didn't do anything there I took the down pipe cut a notch and bent it up and welded it back together ( I didn't have access to a 2" or 2.250" bender so I made do with out).

what year is the 4runner that we are talking about?
 
I was just talking to the exhaust shop here about headers since my headman started cracking. They do a lot of headers on toyotas here. they have had trouble with all the major brands except doug thorley. They cost a bit more but the owner of the shop has had one that he has put on 3 4runners in 5 years and hasnt had a problem at all.
 
Thorley's are good, so are LC engineering and I know they have the 02 bung welded in already. My 22R pickup has had a NWOR header on it for 12 years, it still looks new.
 
when I looked at the LCE header I thought it did not have a bung but I will look again. I am leaning towards a Doug Thorly. I have heard from posts in here, and other forums that his were the way to go. even though summit produces them now, they are still a high quality product. ok guys, thanks for your help, and let me know if you have any other ideas.

I haven't heard as many good things about the Thorley brand since Doug got screwed over by his wife. He is still making headers but his are now "Doug's Headers". I have a brand new LCE header in my garage as of yesterday, haven't got the rest of my exhaust pipe yet so it isn't installed...but it sure is a nice piece of work. It does have the 02 sensor location, its just further down the runner.

great, I will call them up and have a look. I have heard great things about their quality. let us know how the rest of the exhaust turns out. What are you planning for the rest of the system?
