Removing the top

One of the reasons I bought a first generation 4runner was so I could take the top off on those nice spring days. The problem is that joker is heavy and there's no way I can do it by myself. Does anyone have a good system for getting the top on and off? Tell me how you did it and can you post pictures?

Remove all the bolts, the wires and hoses for the rear window washer/wiper, and find a friend.

Lower your back seats, and lie on your back with your head near the center console and push up on the top, while a friend pushes up from the back of the top.

I have removed my top alone once, just sliding it back and angling it down to the ground, but it was very touch and go, and I would not ever try it again, as I almost dropped the damn thing a few times.

I like Roger's method. It gives me a place to start. My additional headache is I'm under a carport and it can get pretty windy. It would not be a good thing to come home from a great day 4wheeling to find my top in pieces!

I used to take the top off by myself, but my back won't let me know, or let's just say that I am not going to attempt it. However, if you are eager to try and nobody is around to help, you basically get inside the 4runner and push it up and walk it back a few inches. Switch positions to kind of put it across your back like you would be doing a squat and lift it up and walk to the back of the vehicle. This is where it gets tricky and scary, and I can't remember quite how I did it except that I would get the top to the point where it wants to slide off of the back, crawl out, reposition to squat the full weight of the top and then walk it back and set it down.
Not fun, but if you reaaallllyy want the top off..there ya go.

If you have carport, make a pulley system with ropes and straps. I had mine set up with a board through the side windows. If you are worried about leaving it suspended, you can either secure it while hanging, or lower it on the ground on to some furniture movers(boards with rollers) and roll it out of the way.

I STORE MY TOP IN THE LIVING ROOM FOR A COFFEE TABLE, THE GIRLFRIEND THINKS ITS TACKY, I LOVE IT
