Whats your guys opinions on buying a 1 owner rented 4Runner? Ive heard both bad and good. Good do to the fact that its really only families who would rent one and not kids. They have good deals on 08's with around 40K on them or 09's with around 20k. However, they were rented and thats the part that bugs me. Does anyone have one that they bought at all?

I wouldn't worry about the engine but did you look at the suspension and wheels and tires? make sure there in good shape. I say take it for a test drive and see if anything feels outta place and if not go 4 it!
 
as long as it checks out fine, i wouldnt worry about it.

both my mustang and my father's mustang started out as rental cars. mine has around 150,000 miles. and my father's 35,000 miles
 
I rented a 07 in Orlando last summer from Alamo, Got to pick out whatever SUV I wanted in the parking garage.... last one left was a gold 4Runner lol people were taking all Trailblazers and Yukons (dummies)... I was very happy to see my same truck (Diff Color) made me feel at home! Also could have got a '08 Highlander loaded but needed the room for luggage.

I also bought a '99 4Runner Limited (White) as my first 4Runner, it was a Fleet vehicle with 152,000 miles on it! I ran it to 201,000 and never had one issue with it!! Gotta love Toyota's!

They are often available in mountain / ski areas. For example you can find them in Utah easily, and one dealer in the Salt Lake area specializes in buying rental T4R's the auction for resale. They're also seen as rentals in Hawaii.

Same here. I personally would never buy from a rental deal.

Just for example- I had a buddy in college who once was broad-sided in his car. So, he had to put it in the body shop for a couple of days, and the insurance company spotted him a rental mini-van (for some reason, I don't know.)

This was over winter break, and so he had some time to kill. He drove his rental van to my house (about 120 miles). We decided to hit up the local pubs, and so I got into his van to drive there. Asked him "How do you like the soccer mom-mobile?" He said- "Not too bad, but it is a serious dog. Very slow, and feels like I have to put a lot of gas into it to keep it running down the highway."

No big deal. As we were driving, I kept hearing a high-pitched squeal/whine from the van. It bothered the heck out of me. I asked him what was making that sound. He had no clue what I was talking about. I was looking....looking...looking. Then I noticed that his PARKING BRAKE was about 3/4 of the way down! I told him to stop and pull the PARK BRAKE lever, to which it then released. Needless to say the van now was a smooth-running FAST machine. He had driven the van for over 120 miles with the parking brake set.

I will NEVER buy a rental, because I know at some point every rental has had an "Eric" drive them around.

It would scare me too.

I think I remember seeing posts of punk kids doing stupid stuff in rental runners. Rentals give people the opportunity to do things they wouldn't normally do in their own vehicles.
 
So right after I moved to CO I was stuck in Dallas during a blizzard just before Christmas. The main highways were closed, but if I didn't make it home in time I knew it was going to be my ass. I found the only 4x4 left at Hertz, SR5, and started driving. Knowing the main roads were closed I started cutting through the backroads, fields, and all of the other crazy "road" like trails. I ended up buying a 4Runner about month later, but there was no way I was going to buy that one after everything I took it through.
 
Mine was a commercial lease before, I'm not sure what that means. Anyway the price was right and its been flawless, except for a siezed rotor.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a rental, if the price was good. I'd much rather have a car that was driven hard but saw proper maintence than a car some old lady had and changed the oil every 10k miles with whatever was cheap, or worse.

True good point. Thank you everyone, i now have a new (like new) 4Runner so i found the one i wanted without having to get a rental. Your car was a business vehicle for somebody, which is probably good honestly as i bet it has mostly freeway miles.
 
I wouldn't hesitate to by a "certified" used rental vehicle--I did once (Ford Explorer that served me well). What would bother me is buying a used 4Runner "off the street", unless I knew for certain its history and care. Since there were no used 09 Trail Editions, I bought new--although I did have a dealer's salesman tell me in "no uncertain terms" that there is no such a thing as an 09 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition.
