Rented a 2004 4Runner from Hertz

Had the vehicle for less that 24 hours and today around 6:00 I went to roll up the rear window and it would not go up.

So the vehicle is sitting at Hertz with the rear hatch window down, I do not know if I have to pay for the day's rental or whatever.

Overall, it was a nice vehicle. I prob will end up ordering a SE because of the X Reas, I had a SR5 and it was decent.

4 Wheel drive controls were weird to me, I could not get the lights on the dash to stop blinking, so I put it back into 2WD and left it.

Only concerns is the rear window and what happend.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Did you even read my post? I am concerned about the Power Window and problems later on basically. I stated I will prob end up ordering a SE (Sport Edition) because of the better suspention (X-Reas)..

Now, any thoughts on the power rear window anyone?

Was the key in the "ON" position when you were trying to close the window?

If a problem did exist, it's probably not very common. You don't see many people having problems with it. Toyota has had the feature practically since the 4Runner's introduction, so they should have been able to work out any problems already.

I sometimes accidentally hit the child-lock which would disable all windows, including the rear.

Perhaps that was it.

I wish that was it, but wasn't. I tried all the windows and even went as far as disconnecting the negative battery cable to reset everything.

People abuse rental cars. He was saying that just because it didn't work on that particular truck it doesn't mean it's a common problem with other runners. You don't have to be rude to him about it.

I agree about the child lock. Did you try to roll up the window with the key?

Sorry if I came across rude.

Yes, I called a Toyota Dealer and the salesman walked me through the steps on trying to using the key, nothing worked.

The window worked fine yesterday and today?

Atleast I have an idea what a 4Runner without a Moon Roof feels like now and I can go ahead and pull a trigger on an order. I am just curious on what happend with the window for future reference.

You've been around these forums awhile and so have I. This is the first instance I've seen where someone reported that the rear window didn't work. It's probably the abuse these rental cars get.

We've got over 2000 happy T4R drivers on the board, and tens of thousand other drivers that haven't been enlightened by T4R.ORG yet

Yeah, I thought it was odd. I did a search and found no problems, only came up with moon roofs.

Btw, I back of the seat did click a little and moved like Vin's did in the video, but it did not move when I sat in it, only when I shook it like a Cali Quake.

Overall, I have to give the 4Runner a big thumbs up.

I just came back from Orlando this past Saturday and we rented from Hertz too. We ended up having a Camry because we were not aware that they even had 4Runners. When we got there, I saw all of the Galactic grey 4Runners and was pleasantly surprised. My parents asked the them if they had any available but they weren't.

Anyway, people do nasty things to rental cars. I have never heard of any problems with the rear window switch. It is probably from somebody abusing it or spilling something in there. You never know what someone could have done to that truck. Just for an example, our rented Camry was messed up too. The dial to choose where the A/C blow was broken. It was only blowing to your feet even when you had the dial to where it should blow to your face. It took a lot of twisting and turning to finally get it right. Don't let that experience give you a sour taste of the 4Runner. I guarantee that you won't do anything to your 4Runner like the previous drivers did to that rental.

they will stop blinking when the 4wd system engages, sometimes it takes like 30 seconds or less, it depends on the type of driving u are doing at the time or if u are at a stop, the system engages at the best time possible...

Why is Toyota lowering themselves to the likes of Ford I'll have to agree Rentals do see their fair share of abuse unlike anything compared to how someone would abuse their own car, if you wanna know why the rear window did not work maybe the previous guy pulled it out and put a faulty 1 back in, I knew a guy who worked for a rental place and people actually rent cars pull the engine and or trans and put their identical 200k motor in and bring the car back rental cars are donor cars to some people, swap wheels and tires, any part that wears or is removeable, I've heard some seriously crazy stuff.

Also only rent from name brand places, if the brakes are gone or the car is in an accident that should not have happened a large well know company will have money unlike the noname rental places who will leave you high and dry.

When I was out in Michigan visiting my cousins for a wedding the rental place at the airport was hugh and the guy who brought my Navigator with 7 miles on it pulled into the parking lots at 100mph and hits the brakers like 10 feet from the building I could not be showed up so I showed him how you do a front wheel burn out in an AWD vehicle:

Most rental car places keep the cars for 20k and then sell them like use cars, I worked in a Ford dealer, people bought low mileage mustangs and tauraus and the cars where plagued with problems and defects but Ford sold them with 100k warranties

Child Safety Lock

I can not believe it everyone!

I checked the fuse, reset the ECU (negative battery terminal) and did the child safety lock, but I forgot that the master controls could override the rear passenger doors, not the hatch.

Boy do I feel stupid...

They are returning the vehicle to me in 30 minutes... Thanks guys.

I feel so dumb though... I did check it, but I must of not pushed it in all the way or vice versa... :headslap:

eh...don't feel too bad. I was complaining that it was a pain to reprogram how the doors auto lock...well, a friend was over and she picked up the manual and read the instructions and said, "close the drivers door, there stupid. it's the first step in the instructions, how'd you miss it??" heh...we laughed about it a bit, tho. :

Oh well... I learned,. that is for sure... I skimmed through the manual, next time I will need to read it all the way through.. My patience were wearing thin yesterday.

I believe if you have the child safety lock on, you can still roll down the window with the Keyless Entry Remote (Fob) and the drivers door window still works.

I think that there threw me off.

Ok, I follow...the window lock button was down.

Your description is correct—the driver's window will go up and down, and the rear window will go down by pressing the button on the remote, but other windows are deactivated, and the rear window will not roll up.

Well, glad to know it was something simple. A good learning experience for everyone here...we'll know what to look if these symptoms occur!
