ok, someones giving out Rep power without thinking!

whoa just clicked a post of mine to see my rep points and it says I have 18?! though my rep power in my user CP says 1. how could i have 18 rep points i'm hardly helpful compared to most of you guys lol

I just figured out why when you click on your rep in a post the number is different that the number displayed in "User CP."
The number in "User CP" is basically how powerful you are. The higher that number is the more points someone gets or loses when you rep them.
The number that you can see in posts is the actual amount of points you have.

ok so i know im reviving this old thread, but hey it means im using the search feature... so heres my question. this morning and yesterday i had 7 rep power, today i have 6, i checked my rep power details and i do not have any new negative reps or anything that would bring down my rep power so what gives... and what does all of the "...will soon enough be famous", or "...is on a distinguished road" mean or imply. and how much other rep power must you spread around before you can give it again? there are a lot of people here who are always helpful and go out of their way to help when they could bash, and really never bash anyways. i have given them rep power in the past for going out of their way to find the answer for someone else, or for the work they have put into things ect or for just having the correct answers, and yeah time and time again they are consistent, i think we should be allowed to give them more rep power without having to go give others who might not be so helpful unwarranted rep power just to be able to give the ones who deserve it, some more. i think rather we should have to wait at least a week or two(maybe a month idk) before giving the same person more rep power. this way its harder to abuse and would prevent "buddies" from just back and forth rep power giving to get their rep up fast.... also i think the rep power shoud not be able to be given twice to the same person on the same post(maybe even in the same thread) by the same person multiple times, like i should not be able to give [MENTION=56044]downpour11[/MENTION] multiple rep points for the same post of him completing his SAS or [MENTION=25058]ChildrenOfBodom[/MENTION] keep giving COB rep for doing a 4wd swap in his runner after i already have. so yeah i think some changes could be made, and it would be nice to either be directed to an explanation of how the rep power/points work here and or if there is not official explanation for it, if then we could get one. thanks

I'm confused as well, but no one really uses rep points here even when it was first introduced. On tacomaworld you can get 10 rep points and be "the sharpest tool in the shed" and the next step would be "... is reputable beyond repute". On another site I've seen, you need 100 rep points to even get to 1 square, and you can't give the same person rep again until you give 30 others rep first - which makes more sense to me. So, however the system is setup it's pretty pointless unless people actually use it and give rep for actual knowledge and good advice. AND however the point system is setup, it would need to be setup in a way where someone's rep would represent how "knowledgable" or "helpful" one is. But the fact of the matter is, we're way past that, and for it to even be useful, the rep system would have needed to be setup years ago.
FYI I have 5 reps from the past 3 years. I was at "rep power 5" 2 months ago and for some reason I'm now at "7" and have not had any "rep" since. They're all random too as you can see haha unnecessary rep. It's pretty pointless if you ask me. Just a feature on vbulletin to give ego-boosters lol
Also, I just noticed... how do 5 rep points make "21 points total"? flawed lol no idea how this works, and it's pointless if no one uses it correctly.

When I tried using the normal search engine of the forum, I couldn't get rid of the millions of power steering threads.
Anyway, thanks for explaining what rep power is.
Apparently rep power, in detail anyway, can actually be COMPLEX simply because the VBulletin admin can set the algorithm to a variety of methods, so, no answer is complete without knowing the actual settings that the admin of this site set (or intuiting that algorithm from experience).
For example, under "Admin CP > Vbulletin Options > User Reputation ", there are different settings that the admin can change.
For example:
1. Registration date: for every _x_ number of days users are registered, they gain 1 point; so what they can give also goes up one point.
2. Post count: for every _x_ posts, users gain 1 point; so what they can give to others goes up a point.
3. Reputation: for every _x__ reps received, users gain 1 point; so what they can give to others goes up a point.
Here's one "example" setup I found on the web, to show the possible complexity:
a. For every 30 days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
b. For every 10 number of posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
c. For every 50 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
d. How many posts must a user have before his reputation hits count on others?: 10
e. How much reputation must a user have before his reputation hits count on others?: 1
f. How many reputation clicks can a user give over each 24 hour period?: 10
g. How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again?: 5
