Repainting - license plate housing

Just repainted my license plate housing and wanted to share a few pics of how i did it.

first i decided to mask off the area instead of removing the housing completely. taking apart the rear end was something i didnt want to do.

removed the rubber strip around the border and masked off with tape and some paper.

and the latch and light area

I used rust-oleum flat black high heat paint, also used on the roof rack and wind deflector and considering doing rims and flares later.. but back to the housing.

I had hoped painting would help hide these cracks but it didnt as much as i wanted, still think it came out ok.

Looks good! Do you think a couple coats of clear would help hide those cracks better? Or are you wanting to keep the flat black look?

thanks. i was debating on using clear but i wasnt sure it would do any better hiding the cracks so i went with the flat black to match the other things ive painted. the fender flares are going to be a chore when i get to them, maybe i'll use a clear coat on those

Why did you use the grill paint? I've found that a normal flat black looks much better, if you don't NEED the high temp paint then why use it? If you are trying to hide some scratches use some high build primer and sand it down, then use the flat black.

LOL one guy had his window down and the paint goes right thru the screw holes into the back hitch and put two nice little black dots on his back window!

yeah, you dont really need Hitemp unless its near the brakes/rotors or engine... body parts dont get hot enough.

but still, looks good, I plan on painting mine also

haha yea youre both right, i had some of this paint left over from awhile back so decided to try it. sanding probably would have worked better and i might get it a go later

Makes a huge difference!! I did mine about two months ago. The front grille and valance I taped off but for the back I took apart because I was curious about the motor inside for the window, etc.

also did the sun roof wind deflector but pics are on facebook and with an iphone that's a huge task...you get the idea. If for some reason you wanna sell your 4Runner this is a good way to fix it up and easy too. Gave this pointer to a kid trying to sell his I looked at about 1 week later it was gone lol

Nice! Looks good, I'm debating whether or not of painting the plastic part on the back bumper and then the roof rack and the front bumper and now along with the license plate encasement. I think it will help clean it up a bit and make it look nice again.

This has definitely helped me to think it would!

haha yea it looks more black but does have a lighter shade to it
