Replace antenna mast on 2000 4Runner

Hi,
My antenna mast is bent and I would like to replace it. The motor and ribbon are ok. Can anyone suggest the easiest possible way to replace it. Do I have to remove the fender splash guard or can it be done without accessing the motor? I had read that there is a special way of having the motor automatically release the ribbon by using a button sequence on the radio.

I read you can replace just the mast. The dealer should have mast available seperately aside from buying the entire assembly with motor and all.
