Replaced converter, but engine light back on!!!

I am starting to wonder why Toyota got such a good name for reliability.... My check engine light came on a few months ago. Toyota replaced the O2 censors twice, but the check engine light kept coming on(along with the vsd and another light). Then they said that the Cat Converter needs to be replaced. Did that. Now the check engine light, vsd, and the other traction light are all on with the ABS light joining them now.... This thing is going to cost me $5000.00 by the end of the month!
Could the computer just be on the fritz???

Not sure about your problem, but I'd suggest maybe swinging by AutoZone to have them read the codes, then post them on here and maybe we can get to the bottom of this.

I noticed your signature says you have an R. Nice, those are fun cars to drive. I traded my S60R for my 4Runner, definitely miss it. You do any mods (FMIC, tune, etc)?

Could you post the repairs done along with any notes the dealership wrote for your paperwork.

Also get a list of the codes that have been set and what they are, maybe we can help you out here.

Thanks for the responses guys! The Cat was replaced yesterday, the O2 sensors a couple months ago. I am going to get the codes tomorrow and will post.

I do like my R, it goes like hell and is fantastic in the snow, but it isn't without it's flaws (rattles, shakes, electical glitches, rough ride,etc). Did you mod yours?

Totally stock, for now but I had my lights come on, took it to dealer and they said 3 cylinders were mis-firing and a cat was performing sub par. They replaced the efi and the lights came back on. They replaced the cat under warranty and 1500 miles later, no problems! Check and see if they replaced the wrong cat. Good luck! :cheers:

I did a couple of small suspension mods (stiffer sways, poly bushings, etc.) and never had too many problems, but traded it in bcz I was tired of the maintenance and upkeep. At 130k, like you said, there was a lot... it needed new pads n rotors, new struts (4c system is $$$, 300 per strut), new spring seats, a new a/c compressor, new rear bushings, new tires, and the angle gear/collar were a ticking $2k time bomb. It just wasn't worth it anymore.

I will say that it had the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in, an awesome stereo system, a great motor/turbo, gorgeous stock wheels (18" Pegs) and some of the best brakes out of every car I've owned. It was wicked fast, I loved the AWD, and the stiffer sways made the thing handle like a dream!

I was tempted to drop in an FMIC, downpipe, and a tune, but every time I thought I had enough cash saved up I'd have to fix something else. Oh well! I'm satisfied with my 4Runner, and sure as hell won't be getting any speeding tickets like I did with the R!

I got the engine code, it is P0430. The reader said that it was the cat on bank 2. The one I replaced! They couldn't get the codes for the ABS and VSD though. The ABS and VSD were flashing randomly after they reset the computer. after I restarted it, they came on permanently..... Should I get the computer reflashed??

Sonerick, I am in the same boat with my Volvo. Maintenance is getting more common and more expensive. It might be time to say good by to it, but it would be missed.

With all the stuff you replaced and all the lights your getting I would do a hard reset of the entire truck.

Maybe try disconnecting battery and then turn the key to the on position to drain any residual power and let it sit like that for a half hour. While you let it sit, maybe take a quick peek at the wiring for the 02 sensors to make sure it's in good shape.

Then hook the battery back up, drive it around until you get a new light or code.

When my lights came on a local toyota dealer replaced 2 O2 sensors before it would they go out. And this was after the ford dealer I bought it from replaced the battery. All this was under the ford dealer's 60-day full warranty...hehe.
