Replaced ECM

ACR TECH

I have a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner no security. I replaced ECM due to water damage. I bought one used from a junk yard, same p/n and the truck wont start. I was told the new ECM has security. Could the new ecm be modded to work in a vehicle with no security. I think there was a thread about this but I cant find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I could be wrong but, 3rd gen 4runners have add on security systems, in the 3 and a half years Ive been at toyota, Ive never seen or heard of a security system tied to the ecm. now, I have heard that 99+ limited have chipped keys. if yours is a limited and the "new" ecm is not registered to your keys chip, it wont start. or their is always a possibility that the ecm is bad.

I just asked the master tech in my shop. He told me that if you have a chipped key and buy a used ecm, you wont be able to register the chip to a used ecm but, if you buy a new ecm, it comes in registration mode which means once you install the ecm, the first five times you start the 4runner the ecm will read and store the keys chip code

Are you sure there is not immobilizer in your truck? What does the ignition area look like? Is there a red LED anywhere in the dash with the word SECURITY near it?

I assume you don't have key fobs, but maybe you do - if so, how many buttons are on the fob (and what do they say?)?

If the ECU is indeed the same part number, it should work...but if you have an immobilizer, the ECU will need to be flashed with your keys. I had this done with a used ECU...it doesn't have to be new.

More info, please! :-)
