Replaced Oxygen Sensors - Still getting errors 2003 4R

So I replaced all 4 oxygen sensors. Had them reset the check engine lights and the lights came back on. I took it to inspection and the following errors came up:

P2239 O2 Sensor Positive Current Control Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 1

P2242 O2 Sensor Positive Current Control Circuit High Bank 2 Sensor 1

P2252 O2 Sensor Negative Current Control Circuit LOW Bank 1 Sensor 1

P2255 O2 Sensor Negative Current Control Circuit LOW Bank 2 Sensor 1


I bought this cheap thing here:
Replacement Before Catalytic Converter Oxygen Sensor Universal, 4-wire, heated, 15 cm long, butt type connector

I checked and all 4 are wired properly as per the manuals instructions and all 4 are wired exactly the same.


Any ideas on how I can fix this without paying hundreds for it? Thanks!

Universal fit, all wired the same, all not working.
Two possibilities, wrong part or wired wrong.
Based on what I see frequently with the universal fit ones, it's probably wired wrong.
Does the info tell you what wires are the sensor and which are the heater? The pic just looks like 2 blk and 2 wht.

Two things:

1. Does it mean that all four sensors are messed up or just 2 of them? It says Bank 1 Sensor 1 twice and it says Bank 2 sensor 1 twice as well.

2. The instructions were a bit iffy.... Heres what they say:

The new sensors had 4 wires labeled in a image as follows:
2 White wire (Heater or H)
1 Black wires (Signal or S)
1 Grey wire (Ground or G)

then there is a reference on the old sensor so you know which is which. It says:

If it is Black, White, and Blue which it is the old sensor is:
2 Black wires (H)
1 Blue wire (S)
1 White wire (G)

So I assumed that I crimp the White to the Black, Black to Blue, and Grey to White.

I tested all the connections and the seemed to be fine.

Is it not tightened properly or something because it does say:
Install the new O2 Sensor into its location and tighten to the proper torque listed in the service manual for your vehicle

I assumed that isnt really that serious... bad assumption?

It looks like you wired them correctly. That's a lot more info then comes with most of the universal replacements.
And no, I wouldn't expect incorrect torque to affect operation. I've never bothered with it when I've replaced mine.
The codes are just pointing to the front sensors, but it's possible it's something other than the sensors.
Unfortunately I can't find any useful info in the 2003 FSM. :(

I'm no expert in 4th gens nor even 3rd gens but the most common reading I have done on O2 sensors is stick with stock or a quality equivalent.

The engine computers are looking for a specific feedback provided and the universal replacements you bought are not giving that signal. I believe they can be "fooled" I think URD sells stuff to do so.

However my recommendation is to simply suck it up and buy Nippodenso or Bosch.

Read up on several threads regarding O2 sensors to get a better feel for this. Here or better yet Yota Tech. California emissions gets more complicated of course...

I can't explain the science of it. I am simply stating what I believe I have read from other folks experience.

If cost is an issue then look for an inexpensive Yota parts provider like ToyotaPartsZone or my buds at TRDPARTS4U.com

Remember, error codes DO NOT indicate which component broken, but rather which component is being affected and not working at it's specification by a broken component. So in your case it may be something like the cat. that is not working correctly.

great point. Most 02 sensor problems are cat related in the early 4th gen's
 
The 1GR uses Air/Fuel Ratio (wideband) sensors in the front position, not O2 sensors like you wired in.

You should remove those O2 sensors right away before you damage the ECU.

If you want the correct sensor, a real DENSO AFR sensor, that will just plug right in, we have them on the URD site.

very true, the front sensors are not the same as the rear sensors. find the correct pre-wired Air/Fuel sensors for the front and plug them in. forget about splicing them together.

FYI - I did this on my 3rd gen 4runner and used pre-wired bosch brand sensors. Running ok for a while now. no check engine lights.

Do I need one or two of these sensors? I replaced my O2 sensors (with Densos) and am nwo receiving the 0420 error (cat converter is operating below threshold ... or something like that). Any suggestions (short of a new cat)?

How many miles?
You might still be under the 8 year, 80,000 mile emissions warranty...
if so, take it to a dealership.

Well, I'm under eight years but I'm way past 80K (I'm right around 116K right now). Oh, well. At least I have a great, cheap, mechanic so, if I need to go the new CAT route, the labor won't be too bad.

So I had a P2239 code and I am just going to go ahead and replace both upstream air/fuel sensors with the Denso's. I will probably swap the O2 sensors on the downstream side as well. How much of a difference do you think I will notice if any when it comes to fuel consumption and performance. Thanks in advance.
