Replaced rear diff w/ only 3 qts??

I have an 05 V8 AWD Sport Edition. Did the rear diff fluid drain/change this weekend with Mobil 1, but I suppose incorrectly read and only put in 3 total qts. I could barely fit my pinky in the fill hole, but could not touch fluid.

Should I be concerned? Should I get more fluid? It drives fine and sounds fine for now.

Advice appreciated.

3 qts should be very close. i wouldnt be too worried about damage but you should get another quart to top off.

use a pipe cleaner with a 1" bend to snake into the fill hole to see how far from the hole your oil level is. I would top it off.

Make sure that your vehicle is parked on a level surface and fill it right up to the opening of the fill hole. I did it very slowly because I noticed that it would start to dribble out, but wasn't quite to the top yet. You can attach a piece of clear tubing to the top of your oil bottle's spout, hold the tubing about an inch inside the housing, and squeeze a little bit in at a time, letting it settle between squeezes.

From my recent finger experience! I would suggest checking the topping with smaller hose or wire. You could be ¼” from topping which is good in my opinion. jow

Haha... the one and only, Sparky. Yea I know... just didn't want someone to say that the diff was gonna explode for driving it for a week being 1/4" low.

Looking at the capacity specs of an 07, if an 05 is the same, I doubt a Certified Toyota Tech would add a drop over the 3 qts. At a point it does not matter when we are talking maybe a cup of oil. I let changing oil in a 2001 Camry drive me initially (related to the owner’s manual and 3.8 qts capacity and 2 day process). I called and asked the Dealer, "do you add 3.8 qts or 4 and forget about it"? You know the answer since it was not a 2 day process vs minutes.

I have seen 5 Gallons of engine oil in a 5 qt capacity due to the engine smoking (as you would!) and the owner thinking it needed oil due to smoke and no dip-stick tube (broken replacing the engine due to a lack of maintenance). As I replaced the 1968 Cutlass' water pump (I saw oil at that level on the timing chain), I knew there was a problem. I asked the owner (a personal friend) to drain his oil and it was no end. I told him I w/n tell but I do use it as a point of "Over Kill" vs "Specs"! LOL. jow
