The Josh thanks for the reply and ad. After seeing this add I thought I would contact my local Toyota Dealer to ask the price for just a shell and they let me know it would be $300 unpainted and no hardware. So I think I will be getting one from the dealer.
I never thought just the shell could be this cheap, so The Josh thanks for posting this and giving me the idea to check in on a new tail gate with Toyota. I thought with Toyota it would be no less than $800. They told me they could paint it for $150 as well. So here we go,

When you replaced the tailgates, did you have the back glass up or down to remove it?? I'm swapping mine out today.

My *guess* would be up. I had to take the tailgate panel off for a project and when the window is down it's basically sandwiched in between pieces of metal which I think are welded together. I could be wrong, but from what I could tell there is no way to get it out if its in the down position.

Wow, I would like to know what kind of pull you have with your dealer. I just called them to give me a quote on my 06 4RL and they are telling me $840.00 unpainted.
I have found a used one on CL and the guy is wanting $900.00 with everything and its the correct color as well but I am a little skeptical as when I called the dealer, he stated that there were multiple types in that year and needed my VIN to make sure he gets me the correct one.
Any opinions on what may be the difference? Mine does have the spoiler on it so I am wondering if that had a dramatic increase on the cost?

Have you ever managed to swap the tailgate? Found a complete one and wondering if there is any programming or adjusting needed to swap the tailgates, will the window regulator work?

Im looking next week to drive about 5 hours to a scrap yard next to Boston, and my plan is to take some tools with me and swap the the tailgate directly there to avoid..any Canadian customs explanations..
Does anyone has an experience with a swap? Im doing an 03 to another 03 complete assembly? Does it need any reprogramming of the computer to have the windows working?
Would really appreciate some feeback..so I wont drive several hours for no reason.
