Replacing 1990 4Runner Transmission

I have been volunteered to replace the tranny in my sisters 1990 4Runner 4WD V6 Automatic.
I've been told that the only way to get the transfer case off is to take the tranny apart. Is this true? If anyone has any helpful info.... do's and dont's to arm myself with before I dive in please let me know.

yes the transfer case and transmission is one unit

Yeah, with the auto trans the t-case is integral, with the manual it's 2 separate pieces.
