Replacing 99 painted rear bumper with chrome

I'm buying a 99 limited with 124k on it this week and it needs a new back bumper. Old center section is dented. All I can find are the painted ones due to the fender flares. Has anyone taken the chrome bumper ends and drilled the holes to use them on the limited? Also is there anything else I need to be aware of because of going to the chrome bumper?

If your not looking for OEM parts, EBAY has chrome bumpers and ends with or without flare holes.

Couple of things. I have seen some aftermarket "Like OEM" chrome bumpers that seems to rust a lot faster than actual OEM bumpers. If I were you, I would consider buying an aftermarket, plate, tube, or hybrid bumper. If I had to replace my rear bumper again, I would definitely look at something like a CBI off road bumper.

But if you want OEM, I would also take a look at some pick and pull locations in your area, maybe even Craigslist.

i swapped my painted rear bumper w/ the chrome ones. These bumpers are very thin and serve more cosmetic purpose than anything else.

Drilling holes are very easy.

Do you currently have this bumper? Ive been looking at the addicted offroad tubular bumpers but my bf says it doesn't look clean enough. Altho I do like the tubular look. This hybrid is pretty spiffy. Do you recommend this one or a different brand? $800+ is hard to shuck out

No, I don't have the CBI rear bumper. But out of the ones out there, I lik the look of their hybrid the best overall. I would say do some research before making a big purchase like that. I mean, OEM is OEM, you might even find some deals. But, if you are considering buying an aftermarket rear bumper, do the research.

For instance, there are more than a couple of companies that have a great looking design, but crazy fabrication lead times.

Ask yourself what you plan to do with your 4runner down the road. You may not want to now, but do you plan to lift your vehicle?

If lifting, or going with bigger tires, you need to think about spare tire storage. Some aftermarket bumpers let you know that the spare tire storage location becomes unusable with their bumper. Well, that's important. Do you want or see a rear tire carrier in your future?

It might just make more sense to find a good deal on a pick and pull stock bumper for now, save money, and figure out if these are things you want somewhere down the road.

Well I just got a 3in toytec lift for christmas so that will be going in my rig in the spring. Ive been drooling over the addicted offroad bumpers but the CBI deff caught my eye. They average about the same in price and I'm not too indifferent about the weight. I haven't really thought much about the tire situation, I've never had a use for a spare tire. I don't do wheeling since theres not much for me where I currently live. I do know there are other brands out there and Im don't care much for lead times. Its something that is expected with smaller owned business
