Replacing a broken timing belt - questions

My timing belt (3.0 3vze 1995 model sr5) bit the dust the other day after both the water pump AND the tensioner pulley siezed up. I have everything off so far except the crank pulley and the #1 timing cover.

How do I find the TDC (on the compression stroke) with the crank obvoiusly having been turned without the cam gears? I would hate to have everything back together to find I'm 180 out of time.
(lot's of BS work to get to this danged belt)

Thanks for the help guys - I guess no-one else has done this. Well, I'm not selling it to you freaks. If I have to do it twice, thats fine, but no-one here will know.

First off, dont be an ass, if they dont know how to do something, they wont post, and not everyone here checks every day.

First problem. I dont know if the t4r uses a non interference head. If it does, u dont have to worry, otherwise, ur going to do alot more damage.

When a timing belt goes, valves stay down, intake or exhaust it doesnt matter, but if the motor does not uses a non interference head a piston is going to ram itself into a valve. Best case scenario, bent valve, worst, hole in the piston, hole in cylinder walls, you get the idea.

To find tdc. Use a compression tester, remove the no 1 spark plug, and attach the tester and bumb the engine (or use a L handle and socket on the alternator) till u reach the highest compression. Check the timing marks it should read tdc.

Yes my t4r 3VZE engine is non-interference, the valves and pistons never meet.

That's a nice general way to find TDC, but there are 2 TDC, one at the top of the compression stroke, and one at the top of the exhaust stroke. Or does that even matter since I'll be resetting the cam timing too? Is there a crank position sensor on these things?
 
Bingo, you are completely right, since you are resetting the timing it doesnt matter weather or not the piston is at what used to be the compression or exhaust stroke. As for a cps, the probably is one, you'd have to ask someone else on how to deal with that (resetting and such)
