replacing a/c clutch and bearing

well I have had my 1995 4runner for 5 days and when the ac compressor gets hot (I think) the bearings get hot and sieze up, the a/c runs fine for about 5 minutes then starts to chirp then shortly after it start to squeal and the belts start burning as it slips around the pulley. has anyone done this change?


I have ordered a haynes repair manual I should have it next week, but I'd like some a/c on these hot july days

It's not the A/C clutch or bearing. It's the compressor, it's locking up and you will need to replace that and the dryer. Vacuum, recharge and you should be on your way.

how much is that going to cost?

I just bought the darn thing
dont really feel like dropping another 500 - 600 dollars in it right now, I might just wait till the winter, and just my dual 55 A/C
should I do it, or should I just pay a shop to do it

I am pretty mechanically inclined.
what causes this, I figured because it sat for awhile

Well if you buy a used one from a salvage yards it'll cost around $150 for a compressor and clutch. A new dryer will cost around $30 and a couple new O rings from the dealer. Install the compressor first and then the dryer last.

You can rent a vacuum pump, gauges, and buy freon at autozone. Rentals are free!!

So basically if you do it yourself it'll be around $200.

OH yeah have you check your belt? Maybe it's just not tight enough.
