Replacing Axle and Hub Bearings

About a year ago, I noticed a vibration/sound coming from my axle when turning. After going to several dealerships and told a bunch of shit initially I find out that I have 2 CV boots that are shredded. I wanted to fix them earlier on, but I had no time, as well as my extended warranty didnt cover it. They assured me that I should just replace it down the line when the axle starts becoming worse and just lube it until then.

Now, i not only have to replace both axles, I also have to replace the hub bearings on both sides. Total of $2800! Dealership is crazy. Just curious if anyone has had similar issues and if someone knows where I can get the parts for cheap?

My idea now is to replace the axles from my local mechanic and then go to the dealership and try and claim the bearings. Hopefully this would be the cheapest and best option I have and it goes smoothly.

I read your post and I would like to know what you mean when you say you were told a bunch of shit.
because I have an appointment at 1230 on Friday for the dealership to look at my 06 SR5

The CV's should have been replaced when they started to mess up or leak badly. I'm not sure if they can directly cause the bearings to go bad, but I can tell you bearings probably are not going to be covered by warantee. I may be wrong, but bearings like other parts can wear out over time and may or may not be covered. CV's are cheap ($150 or so?) and easy to replace. Bearings have to be pressed in and are about $250-$350 per side at a local mechanic. Hope that helps. Another note, if your CV's had been repaired early on, they could have repacked and put on new boots for cheap.

Basically when going to these dealerships they would tell me it is the brakes, my steering, etc... basically they would shotgun it of all possible things wrong and they would keep rechecking my car..which turned out to be a lot of time until I received a definitive answer. Plus each time they would say I would have to get a service done...and it of course was never covered by warranty. I would now only take the dealerships advice with a grain of salt and if you feel like the problem is not exactly what they are saying trust your instinct and go to a trustworthy local mechanic.

I believe you are right on both pts my CV although leaking did not cause my bearings to go bad. I had a local mechanic and a friend who is a mechanic look at my axle and tell me they were fine. The bearings I replaced for $700, one was horrible and the other was not bad but since I was replacing them I figured get both done. I will most likely replace my CV boots when the problem seems to worsen, prob get it checked during every oil change and wheel alignment.
