Replacing Ball Joints

I've got to replace all 4 ball joints on the front of my 1990 4runner, the stealership is quoting me over a grand!

I've tried finding detailed instructions online but am only finding vauge info. Does anyone have any advise or experience replacing the upper and lower ball joints?

Also, the dealer said it would be a grand because thay have to remove the front axles to get clearance to remove and replace the lower ball joint....any thoughts?

Get a good repair manual.

I have both the Chilton and Haynes manuals. I found a source for the Robert Bently manual. Their books for VW's are far superior, so I am expecting the same for my 4R.

You may have to drop the axles, but it should not be that huge of a deal. Most dealerships charge double for the parts, plus they are much more than the same part at the local NAPA or whatever. Plus you then have to pay somewhere around 50 to 75 bucks an hour for labor, plus whatever other fees they want to charge you. I can get my timing belt changed for half what the stealership wants at a local ASE certified shop.
