Replacing ECU...How do I get it to re-learn the different vehicle?

I have a 95 and my transmission stopped going into over-drive. Upon inspection, the trans. is fine and the ecu needed replacing (something about the lock-out solenoid). I got another ecu with the same model numbers and now the truck starts in 3rd! Does anyone know the steps to do this correctly? Thanks in advance.

i don't have much (any) experience with auto transmissions, but the first place i'd look is to make sure you hooked everything up correctly. the ecus in the old (pre 95) trucks are pretty primitive, and any "learning" they did was very limited. i doubt that the computer needs to "learn" not to start in 3rd, there's probably something else that went wrong in your installation that's telling the computer to start in 3rd.

things to check:
-make sure all connectors to the ecu are on right
-make sure the speed sensor is hooked up
-make sure the tps (throttle position sensor) is hoooked up

maybe someone else with more experience with autos can help you out more.
