Replacing Factory Stereo Head Unit - Needing USB and AUX Ports

I am replacing my factory stereo head unit in my 4Runner and replacing it with a stereo head unit that has a USB and AUX port. So I may hook up my Android phone for music, navigation, calls and more.

Wish Toyota would have incorporated this into the vehicle from factory. lol.

Below you will find the stereo I am looking at buying.

I would like to know if anyone has bought this stereo head unit for their vehicle and what their opinions would be on the head.

Plus do you think it would look good in the 4th Gen 4Runner.

I cannot tell you about those units but I put this unit in last year and haven't had any issues. Also, I like the smaller units because then you open up a space below the deck for your cell phone or ipod to set down. Of course you need to put some anti-slip stuff on the plastic or else the first time you gas it, the phone flies out into your lap.

Thanks for the reply. The stereo you installed was one of the single units I have concedered buying. Personally I like the look of a double deck better than the single deck. Do you have any pics of your Pioneer installed?

Plus was there anything special you had to buy besides the stereo? I need to be able to use the USB and AUX ports on the new stereo and this is the reason for buying a new one. My vehicle is the SR5 and does not have the JBL stereo but instead the simple factory stereo.

If you do the double din, put the urban runner trim on. This is my radio. Looks more factory.

Like I said earlier, I like the single wide deck because you get the slot which is handy to set your phone on. I just plug the aux into the phone and stream pandora when I drive, very handy. Here are two pics that I just took.

Ordered from Crutchfield they supply the install kit (plastic part) and wiring harness. I also do not have the JBL system and an SR5.

Sony has a mirror link system that enables certain android operated and iphone to control the head unit.. I think the only android phone that works is the Samsung GS3 right now.. I WANT ONE!!

I just use a tape deck adapter and stream pandora through my razr until i get the chips to upgrade.

I'll have to check it out. I have the Samsung GS3 so I will for sure take a look but I would like a nicer stereo too. But I will for sure check it out.

One thing I just want to add is that you might want to make sure whatever you get has Bluetooth. I recently upgraded my deck to a Sony with Bluetooth and it is fantastic to just be able to hop in the 4runner and hit play right on the deck without having to take my phone out of my pocket. My pre-paired iphone starts streaming Pandora, Slacker, Downcast, or whatever was playing last. The controls on the deck are able to skip tracks/ff/rev and the artist / title / whatever is displayed on the head unit.

If I had to do it again, I might get a double-din sized deck that allows me to change the color of the display to match all the amber in our climate controls. Anything that claims to have 'Pandora' controls (like the one I got) requires an android or blackberry, it doesn't work with iOS since Apple locks stuff down too much. But I'll never get another deck without Bluetooth, it's so cool.

They have a similar one that has the aux jack, bluetooth, and a USB port - it allows you to change from blue to red also.

I had some concerns about getting the right dash mount kit with a double-DIN receiver so I decided to stick with a single DIN. This particular stereo has a rear-mounted USB cable which I plan to route into the glove box. That way I can just load a 16GB USB stick up with music, throw it in the car and forget about it.

Most of these modern stereos will let you stream Bluetooth audio, which I might do. I've had issues doing that before with other cars, though, and the audio quality itself is pretty bad since it gets compressed heavily.

I also got new speakers (Infinity) and all the various adapters to make everything work, including preservation of the steering wheel controls.. Look for an install thread w/ pics coming up in the next couple weeks. Hope it all works.

Just make sure it has Bluetooth A2DP - that will give you the full audio quality. Older Bluetooth equipment would output mono.

In the market for a new system also. Volume knob does not work too well anymore but I can still control it from the steering wheel just fine. Do any of the above units work with the steering wheel controls? I like the idea of the new Bluetooth.

Try not to laugh too hard, but I do the same as "Goodside". Tape deck adapter hookup up to my android phone to stream Slacker. Cheap and it works for now.

Slightly more expensive but a much cleaner look with lots of features. Doesn't have bluetooth but it can be added. Don't buy from Crutchfield. very expensive. I like Sonic Electronix, excellent customer service and great prices.

daka320 the 4th Gen came with two options for stereos from the factory. You could go with the base or the JBL stereo. I think the standard base stereo had no steering when controls but the JBL stereo did. Now I could be wrong the base option not having steering wheel controls. Steering wheel controls might have just been a extra feature you could have picked when ordering the vehicle new. But I could be wrong here. But honestly I think if you have the steering wheel control wires are embedded into the stereo's cables. Which means it will automatically work with any system. - Again maybe I have this wrong. lol. That is a really nice option but would a touchscreen look to new for the 4th Gen? That is a question I wonder about when thinking about putting a touch screen in.

Yes it is a little more costly for sure but nice.

And yes I will not use Crutchfield - to expensive for sure.

BTW does anyone know if they make a split din like the one you use for a single din stereo but instead you can fit a single din stereo and slim cb radio like the ones pictured below?

Or could you just stack them? or would this cause heat issues?

I know nothing about CBs, but, if it is the same dimensions as a DIN head unit and has the s****ard DIN screw holes on the sides; it could be mounted with both in the dash opening. You'll have to do some research on the mounting options for the CB's.
