Replacing front speakers only...

...considering a pair of 4 ways for the front 2 speakers as the stock pair lack midrange and high end.

Is this a difficult DIY? Does the entire door panel come off or just the speaker cover itself?

All the Yotas I've ever worked on require the door panel to be removed. Any have what look like 6x9 speakers but they have a triangular 3 point mounting system (not the common aftermarket 4 point).

My understanding is that you will need to fabricate or purchase an adapater to mount the aftermarket 6x9 speakers.

Sorry... should have mentioned it is a 2007 SR5.

Crutchfield says that a round pair of 6.5 inchers will fit, with their included bracket.

The speaker covers LOOK like they can just pop off easily, but I am not sure and dont want to order the speakers and installation instructions without first getting some advice from those with 07 runners.

while your at getting their bracket, i would suggest getting their speaker harness also, you wont have to solder, crimp, tape, etc anything, makes putting the factory speakers back in alot easier also since the plug is retained, and no worries about mixing up positive / negative

Crutchfield told me that the stock amp/head unit with my 2007 SR5 really did not not have enough power to drive FRONT REPLACEMENTS.

i WAS ALSO WONDERING how the replacement speakers would work with the tweeters.

I'm not wanting th replace the head unit, or buy another amp. I wondered if very sensitive speakers might work.

I did add a 200 amp...and replaced the head unit with the Scion T1807. I will be replacing that soon once someone comes out with a head unit with the right mix of features (right now I am seriously considering the Dual XDVD8285. I have no need for navigation.) The Scion HU puts out ~160W...so that might satisfy your needs,

But to be honest, the sound I am getting from this setup is very nice. (Of course I have spent almost 20 years around large caliber weapons too...but it still works for me.)

As for the speaker install...all I did was trim off the flange from the door panel. It is roughly 1/2 inch sticking out from the door panel...trimmed it off with a Dremel.

You'll hear a difference if you replace the front speakers, even if you never replace the HU or add an amp. Others in here have done that in the past with good results. Crutchfield is correct in that the stock HU probably won't push any aftermarket speakers to their fullest, but I have no idea what they mean by what you quoted. Cheap paper cones and paper dome tweets don't compare to even inexpensive aftermarket speakers. You are right-on to get ones with a high sensitivity. Don't know what your budget is, but the Infinity Reference series are nice in budget systems without amps.

Thanks. I am drooling over the Infinity REF623I 6 by 9s. I heard them at Best Buy and they had lots of midrange and treble.

They are rated at 94 sensitivity, 3 3/16 deep, and need an 8 7/8 cutout. They are around $150.

Is there a trick to putting this type of speaker in the 6 by 9 opening? I read through this board a few weeks ago, and don't remember if this set up needs a special kit or not.

The kid at Best Buy seemed nice, but a little too gung ho about jumping on the install. I wanted to confirm his advice before taking the plunge.
