I have spent a lot of time looking through threads/posts regarding adding XM radio using a factory radio module and fit kit, and I have read a lot of threads regarding keeping the JBL Synthesis system and swapping in an aftermarket head unit while keeping steering wheel button functionality using an iDatalink Maestro RR adapter and HRN-RR-TO1 module, and even threads on adding the Bluetooth right-side buttons if your steering wheel doesn't have them - I'm adding mine this week as soon as they come in.
What I have not been able to find, however, is information confirming whether or not using the iDatalink modules and installing the Kenwood DDX9903S head unit I want, or any other head unit for that matter, will retain control/use of the Toyota XM radio module.
A call to Crutchfield resulted in the rep confirming without a doubt that it WILL work, while the local installer that I plan to use confirms without a doubt that it WILL NOT work.
Even referring to information found on iDatalink's own website returns ambiguous answers, with the installation instructions detailing how to bring up XM Radio on the head unit during installation, but then a checklist of compatibility with factory functions preserved on a 2006 4Runner Limited with the JBL Synthesis system omitting a check-mark next to "Satellite Radio".
Has anybody with a 2006-2009 T4R with the JBL Synthesis system that has the factory XM Radio module swapped out head units using the iDatalink modules and can confirm for me if it will or will not work?
I am skeptical about the confirmations that it WON'T work because my wife has an FR-S with the Bespoke / Pioneer head unit, and calls to Scion confirmed without a doubt that XM could not be added to that car. That head unit is used in other Scion cars, and they reportedly had XM capability, so I simply ordered her a TC fit kit and module, and had the local installer add it to her car, and she has been rockin' out on XM with it for close to 5 years now.
Some of you may ask "Why is he so determined to use a factory XM module with an aftermarket head unit instead of just buying a module directly compatible with his new radio?", to which I answer: "Because lifetime subscriptions." Both modules in our cars have lifetime subscriptions which were purchased years and years and years ago, and in an effort to generate revenue, XM has stated to me that they will not switch the lifetime subs to any other hardware for me again. Ever. I'd really hate to lose my "free" XM.
