Replacing Lug studs a walk in the park?

Last time I broke a lug off the wheel was with my Supra. They had to remove the wheel and use some kind of special tool to remove the broken stud and install the new one.

I paid $20 to get a stud and lug replaced on my 95. I would have tried to do it myself, but just don't have the time.

It can be easy but most likely it will be a PITA. The lug is a splined knurled press fit. It can be down at home usually with a day or two of penetrant and then hammer and punch. Sometimes heating up the surrounding area(be cautious if you have coated with lubricant) will aid in removal. Once you get the old one out you simply push the new on in and can either press it in place or use a stack of washers and then tighten the nut down until it is seated fully.
If you have a air hammer and impact wrench, it's a 5 minutes job. Use the air hammer to pound the broken stud out. This better then a sledge hammer as each impact produce less energy, and therefore less likely to break the wheel hub.
Install new one is as easy as using couple of washer as spacer and use the lug nut to draw the stud into the wheel hub using impact wrench. I suppose, you could use a hand wrench too.

I replaced all 6 studs each side on my brothers 99 to accomodate for the wheel spacers, all it took was a hammer to pound the old ones out..overall it took me no more than 15 mins each side to remove and replace with longer ones.
It's a lot easier if you use an impact gun, some wd-40 or any spray-on lubricant and spray the splined part of the bolt to make them glide easier as you tighten up the nut. Use some old wheel nut and yes, a stack of washers or another bigger size nut in front then tighten to pull the new bolt in.
I did exactly the same process when I used SpiderTrax and although I only replaced the front bolts, I would assume it's no diff'rent doing the rear end.

I broke 2 when i was taking my wheels off to paint them, bought replacements and got them installed for about 20 bucks..the guy at the tire place asked me if i was using a 4 point wrench, and i said yes. He explain that was my problem, by pushing down on the lug it causes a cross thread...no good.

hey i just got new wheels and in need of longer wheel studs .where did you get yours and how long are they? ive been looking everywhere for them and cant find them
my studs are about 1/4" sunk in the new wheel
i have a 97 sr5 2wd
any advice would help

My brother in Cali had a difficult time finding them as well so I sent him some which I bought at a local auto parts store....they are exactly 1/4" longer than stock. PM me if you still need them.

If you were quoting my post, no they were from a local auto parts store. Toyota wouldn't carry longer studs.
