I was driving this morning and I kept on hearing a buzzing/cracking noise from behind but I wasn't sure what it was. I just came home and found out my speakers are blown, not surprised since they're still stock. I've spent the last hour researching sizes and best brands but I didn't find anything on how to replace the stock speakers in the back cargo. I dont want to put anything extra like subs or 6x9's since I carry a lot of stuff. I was wondering if you guys could give me advice on what panels I need to remove so I can get to the blown speaker. any help is appreciated.

I replaced the rear speakers in my 90 a few years go. It isn't too hard. All the trim is held on with those snap fasteners.
Remove the rear interior light, the whole plastic thing. Unplug the electrical connector.
Remove the seatbelt bracket on top. There is one bolt under the plastic trim.
Pull off the side plastic trim, starting at the rear. This is the hardest part. It can help having one of those trim removal tools that like a bent screwdriver with a slot. Just take it slow and try not to flex the plastic too much. Be careful along the top because the fasteners holding there are actually part of the panel, not replaceable.
The speakers are in plastic boxes held on by screws.
More than likely, some of the snap fasteners will break, so expect to make a trip the the dealer. Expect the dealer to rape you on those too.

If your speakers are in the black plastic boxes then they have small amplifiers built in and you are really restricted in size/depth speakers you can use. These amplified speakers are usually with the up scale radios. My '90 came with no speakers back there. I think I used 5.5" ones with a plastic mounting plate that Crutchfield provided along with wire pigtails to connect to factory wiring. Seems I could have gone with 6.25" and perhaps even 6x9. Check out the Crutchfield stereo site for fitment suggestions. THese all fit behind the panel so don't affect carrying capacity. Replace the 4T front ones (in dash panels) with dual cone ones for big sound improvement.

Mine had the plastic boxes and builtin amps but it wasn't the upscale radio. Back in '90 I was stretching it to buy the cheapest 4WD 4Runner I could. The only thing I added on was the A/C. The sales manager hated me, they make their $$$ on options. The salesman threw in a leather shift knob. 
I put in 5.5 inch speakers in the rear. If you can fit in 6.5 inch you'll be better off, they really do sound much better, as I have since found out.
Everything I've read seems to indicate that oval speakers suck, rounds are the only way to go.
I recently put tweeters in the top parts of the kick panels and a powered sub under the drivers seat.
I put in 5.5 inch speakers in the rear. If you can fit in 6.5 inch you'll be better off, they really do sound much better, as I have since found out.
