How difficult is it to replace the factory RS3000 system with an aftermarket keyless/alarm system?
My mother-in-law's 98 4Runner Limited has the RS3000 and its not working. According to the stealership, the brain box is bad and needs to be replaced but they are quoting an insane amount for the part and and even more insane price for labor. I know its just a matter of swapping the box under the driver's seat and reprogramming remotes... so I could do that.
BUT, its a lot cheaper to buy a nice basic alarm from one of Directed Electronics' companies and install that.
I am having a lot of trouble finding ANYTHING on the web about the RS3000 system other than the install and operations guide.
I am wondering.... it I simply unplug the brain will the system "go away" and everything else work properly?
Its been a LONG time since I installed a car alarm of any kind so I would probably leave it to the boys at Circuit City or similar just because I am lazy. Unless, of course, I have to take everything apart to remove the RS3000 system then I may as well install it myself while its all apart.
I would appreciate any guidance from the group. I am a lot more familiar with domestic autos so I might need some extra coaching here. My wife's 08 Camry SE is making be a believer though. I love driving her car.
