Replacing starter

I'm planning on replacing my starter tomorrow. Any tips, instructions, tools, etc i need to know before i get started?

Ive seen a couple of threads about coming in through the fender and bleeding the brake lines. That seems like the best way.

All suggestions are appreciated, and i plan to take step by step pictures to post here if possible.

No need to bleed the brake lines. Just need to be flexible. The positioning of the starter could be better placed by a blind monkey. I found the easiest way is to get it out from UNDER the truck. You'll need a couple extensions, because the top bolt for the starter is behind the header pipe.

Once you get the bolts out, reach up from under the truck, and try to finagle it out that way. I found it's easier than trying to get it out of the wheel well. Just my .02...

Are you replacing the whole starter or just the contacts?

I just unbolted the trans fluid check line, but I also have a 2wd, and droped it down from the bottom. Doc2012 is absolutly right in stating you need plenty of extensions. The best combo I found is a 3" + u-joint + 6" + 9". Once I figured that out it was no problem. Also good to have an extra pair of hands as that starter can get heavy quick if you are going it alone.

Putting it back in was more of a pain in the ass than removing it. Had to use a 2x4 to hold it in place for me.

If your 2wd its cake. When i did mine the only bolts i touched was on the rear skid plate and the starter itself. Pulled it from the bottom. Old one out and new one in in less then twenty minutes.(I had done it once before then though.)

I did use like two feet worth of extensions and a swivel/u-joint thinggy on my ratchet.

edit: I lied, I also touched the bolt on the battery terminal. You'll want to be sure to do that. As in un-hook it.

I would just replace the contacts. Its about $20 from the dealer. I still have the starter on my part out truck if something is wrong with your starter besides the contacts.

I've already purchased a new starter. So the best way is from the bottom with several feet of extensions and two sets of hands.

Yup. If you are swapping starters it should be even quicker than replacing the contacts. Dont forget to connect all the wires back before you bolt back up.
