Replacing stock speakers

So fairly simple question... if I wanted to do an upgrade to the existing base system (non JBL), what speakers should I get? I plan on picking up a Scion HU to power them. Not looking for mind bending volume, just clean decent sound.

Thanks,
Rick

Before you do anything, remove the door skin and examine what you will have to do. I used a jigsaw and cut my speakers out of the monstrous adaptor that is in place.

I need to bring this thread back.

I just got and installed the Scion head unit and I do like it quite a bit. However, I still don't think the sound is as good as it could be. I think the stock speakers are likely the reason. I have the base 6 speaker set up.

I know to get excellent sound I could go all custom, but I would prefer to stick to like for like replacements in stock locations. What would be people's recommendations?

Hey dude, i have a 4th gen Sport... i took off the door panels and for the rear speakers in the doors, i replaced them with sony explode 6.5 three ways, for the front, i replaced it with a sony explode 6.x9 three way.... however, i would have rathered put seperate components in the doors... i plan to replace the front door speakers with one alpine tweeter and two 5 1/4's in each door... and the rear door, put tweeter and 6.5 components... i need tons more mid fill than bass... i have a custom sub enlosure with 4 10"punch subs... just my 5 1/4 cents... haha

I upgraded my 02 4Runner with all new speakers. The rear OEM speakers are weak but on eBay someone sells adaptors that will let you replace the 4" with a 5 1/4" speaker. www.hookedontronics.com has great deals on speakers. I went with Alpine 6.5" seperates in the front and 5.25" in the back. They are amped up but you cant go wrong with them. Let me know if you have any questions. I read and asked questions for months before I did anything.

As Cleric stated, all I did was cut the original speaker from its housing then seal on my new trim rings for the Bostons I put in.

As for which speakers, I hightly recommend Boston Acoustics Pro series 6.5s if you have the means to get them. They are incredible. You won't be disappointed.

Good Luck!
