My solution was to do a foam and seat bottom cover swap from a used passenger seat. If you have patience and can operate hog-ring pliers, it is no big deal. I got seats from a junkyard for <$40 for the foam swap (and ended up selling the headrests for a profit).
I swapped the passengers side seat bottom with the drivers and thoroughly deburred the steel part of the seat frame that causes all the cracking/ripping on the exterior side. The new/old bottom has held up just fine.
The passengers seat bottom has temporarily (3 years now?) been a similar color cloth while I get the original drivers piece repaired (possibly never at this point).
