Replacing the stock cd/radio

I just got my first T4R a few days ago - 2001 SR5 4X4. And although the stock cd is tolerable, I'd like to put in a newer one with a small amp, sub woofer and maybe a couple of new mid ranges. Is it difficult for a non pro to install a new stereo? Years ago I used to pull the panel, pop in a new tape deck, run some wires and maybe a crossover, plop in some 6X9's and away I went. Car audio seems to have changed a bit since the late 70's.

There's a local shop that specializes in SUV mods and audio but I could probably save quite a bit doing it myself. I was an engineer in the Navy and I've been building computers and networks for 15 years so I'm not a mechanical idiot. I just don't want to risk doing something wrong because I have no repair manual or schematics.

On second thought

Is it possible to keep the existing cd player and speakers and just add an amp and 10" sub woofer?

Guys at Best Buy do it everyday with far, far less training than you got in the Navy. There are several sites online that give instructions on how to remove the old one as well as wiring color codes. Easier on older modes that don't have steering wheel controls and power up/down antenna. p.s. Many add on Subwoofer boxes have builtin AMps and can easily be added -- one of the wires (Blue antenna power) in the harness suppliies Amp turn on Power.

Thanks for the info.

I was at Crutchfield's web site a few days ago and they do have some excellent install documentation. Best Buy? I wouldn't trust them with my toaster, much less the 4Runner.
